Hi,

I noticed last night that the driver's side header touches the footbox and would like to avoid this. It's the last cylinder (#8 I guess) and it's right by the gas pedal. I remember in high school science we used to have these mats that you could a torch to and they wouldn't get hot. I'd like to get some of that stuff or something comparable to mount between the header and footbox, but my fear is that it contains asbestos :-( . What has everyone else done to get around this issue? Any other suggestions on what material I could use?

Thanks,

Tim TT

My favorite mod was done by Inman Lanier while he was building his car, FFR #1189 four years ago. Header contacted foot box just where you mentioned. He put extra rivets all up and down the footbox aluminum seam, then beat the tar out of it that interfering corner with a hammer. Clearance was instantly made ample, footbox remained intact, and you don't notice the mod unless you're looking very close. Heat's never been a problem, so no extra insulation. Inman's a racer, works with an entirely different mindset than some other builders. His attitude helped me get my car, FFR #1152, together and out on the road a lot faster than I would have otherwise!

McMaster Carr has what you are looking for. Look under silica fabric, fiberglass fabric, ceramic fabric. I have some at home that I am using as a muffler mit(leg saver)to prevent the dreaded snake bite. If you would like a small piece let me know and I will send you some.
