I cannot get my car to turn over. When I turn the key to the on position, the fuel pump turns on and the gauges all work. When I turn the key to start, I get a click at the starter solenoid but nothing else. The battery is new and I have checked all grounds. Does anyone have a diagram showing the wiring from the ingnition switch to the solenoid and beyond?

....

Ok, 2 solenoids, 4 trips to the auto parts store, a new ignition switch, and a few grey hairs later.....a 99 cent wire brush fixed the problem. After getting very frustrated, I went around to each grounding point and cleaned the ground contacts. Each time I cleaned one of the grounds, I would try and start it again. On the last contact on the engine by the water pump, I cleaned it up, tried to start it and VROOOOM! I am now a firm believer in CHECK THOSE GROUNDS! Thanks everyone for your help.

Matt,
The starter is the stock mustang starter. The click comes from the solenoid location mounted on drivers side frame, not from the starter area (passenger side). Could this still be the problem. Do starter solenoids go out? How can I isolate the problem with a volt meter?

Solonoids indeed go out. But if its clicking, it is probably working. Put the voltmeter on the starter side of the solonoid (big wire to starter). THen when you turn the key and it clicks, you should be getting 12 volts. If not, its the solonoid, if so, its the starter or grounding problems. Matt

Do you have a ground strap from the engine block to the frame? Check for continuity from the starter housing to the engine block. A lot of paint on the bellhousing or engine block could be isolating the starter from ground.

Yup, got a good ground from the engine to the frame. Also have a ground from the starter to the frame. I do get 12V at the battery connect at the starter solenoid, but have not yet checked if I am getting 12v at the starter.
