Anybody know a source other than a Ford dealer for a fuel level sensor that goes in the fuel tank? The local parts stores do not carry them and the Ford place had to order and it was well over $100. I am getting really sporatic level readings (classic guages) once the tank gets 3/4 full and lower. As long as it's higher it reads okay. Anybody know a source for the sensor?

I paid $70 for a new one from OEMFordparts.com or try the Five Star Ford link in the vendor section.

I would say try a junk yard - but then how do you know if it will work or not? Thats why I went with a new one, I don't like running out of gas - not that I would do something like that...

Sean I have auto meter connected straight to the ford tank sensor. I might be all wet on this one but there is sometimes a module that sends a constant signal to the gauge. When you drive the sensor in the tank is constantly moving because it's like a toilet bowl valve. thats why it works better when close to full. I did my own wiring so I would ask some one that knows the mustang system first before spending money because the Ford dealler will not take back any thing they order, Those crooks. You might want to try mustangs unlimeted the have a web site, I'll look for my catolog and check. they sell things like that. It's around here somewhere

My sender was giving eratic readings using an ohm meter. I cleaned the ceramic resistor that the contact rides on using some brake cleaner and got much better results. A free fix, if your labor is free!

I believe you are lacking the anti-slosh module. This is part of the gauge cluster. The float in the fuel sender tops out about 3/4 full. Below that it is floating and the readings go up and down as the fuel sloshes around the tank. The module electronically dampens this effect. It is missing when you use after market gauges unless you get one and wire it in place.

If it's sporatic meaning reading one level now ... a little while later another ... a while later another ... etc it sounds like it may only need cleaning as others have mentioned.

If your dial is simply 'waiving' around while driving, the anti slosh module will fix it.

I'm assuming that you specified that you would be using the classics on a Ford Mustang fuel tank (and sensor), so that you recieved the properly calibrated unit.

Otherwise, the $10.00 one above sounds like a heck of a deal.

Tim, I have over 3K on the car and it recently started doing this. It always has moved a lot (going around corners), but not enough to bother me, but about a month ago it started going crazy. It will read fine then jump to full then back down again. I thought it was a ground (I guess it still could be in the dash), but I just had the whole rear out putting in Cobra Earl's trunk and re-did all my grounds and checked the fittings.
