I have a '95 5.0 and I am changing the heads to Ford Racing Y302 GT-40 Turbo Swirl. When I pulled off the stock heads I noticed the head dowels seemed a bit long. I ordered some FelPro replacements at my local parts shop and when I compared them the new ones are significantly shorter than the original dowels.

Is the new dowel due to a deeper drill in the block or a deeper drill in the head? I found that the '94 and '95 engines used a longer dowel but I am not sure the longer dowel will work with the GT-40 aluminum heads. Any ideas which length should work?

Thanks,

Joe.

I would test fit the head to be sure dowel used is not too long. Consider head gasket thickness when testing. Stock gasket will be about .045" compressed after torqueing.
The dowel only needs to be long enough to aling the head to block:)
