What I did was to put a screw driver through the end of the rod, then pick up the master cylinder with the screw driver. If you jerk up hard on the screw driver while holding it with both hand the rod will pop out and the master cylinder will fall to the ground. I had a box with towels under the master cylinder so that it would not get damaged. Basically gravity and the weight of the master cylinder will pop out the rod.

I thought that you had to remove the snap ring and then remove the collar so that the rod could come out. I was very wrong.

OK here is a picture of the difficult and mysterious brake rod clip/oring.

It is a hard plastic C clip. When you force it out it should compress and then snap back into shape. I think that heating it would mess it up.
