My wife’s Volkswagen has accent lighting in the foot area and I keep thinking this would be nice in the Cobra.

I’m sure it’s been done. I keep thinking some led lights would be nice.

What have you guys done? What type and how many?

I used a white led light strip from the parts store attached to the 2x2 tube over each foot box, switched it to the courtesy light on the headlight switch. Invisible unless you crawl in the foot box and works great, plenty of light to find stuff, buckle up, etc.

Think about using a magnetic switch for the doors. Easier to set up than the old style push button switch between the door and jamb.

There are many types out there similar to the ones Watson's Street Works makes.

I ordered some Blue LEDS and put 6 or 7 on a string that was 6' long. Mine are wired to the Parking Lights. Mine are on the 2x2 under the dash (pointing down). You can probably find some with a Resistor already installed, just connect the +and- wires.

Mine...

I got in on a group purchase a while back and installed some lights under the dash. Mine have incandescent bulbs and aren't all that bright unless it is dark out side, then they throw enough light to see. I am planning on upgrading to either LED bulbs or LED lights to have them a little brighter.

I used the donor wiring harness, used the Mustang door switches to turn them on. I wired each door individually. I have a cargo area above the differential and used the Mustang dome light for that area, running of a switch on the dash. That light is bright enough.

underdash lighting

My 33 Hotrod had a strip of LED lights about a foot long or so. Don't remember if they came in the box with the wiring harness or in another box with the kit. They worked very well, just the right amount of light. You could cut the strip in half and add leads and put half on both sides. I would check with Factory5 about them.

Interior lighting

In my Mk II build, I too wanted footwell lighting to facilitate use of the car after dark. Those lights were also intended to ease ingress/egress for passengers, many of whom would not be as familiar with the car as I. For instance, darkness also complicated passenger latching of the four-point harness. I used LEDs, just as you propose. They are little marker lights just like the ones we might use on a trailer, or truckers sometimes use on their rigs. I have one in each footwell, and one in the trunk on the same circuit operated by a dash toggle. IMO, footwell lights work best if we cannot actually see the light itself (it becomes a harsh source of glare), so I have the things mounted under the dash. That has worked fine for me over the last 13 years. Good luck.

As with others, I installed led strips in each footbox as well as in the trunk and engine area. All are individually controlled by individual mini rocker switches (lit when on) which are located on the console panel.

LED strips from trunk to foot boxes to under hood, I bought a roll in the 6000 kelvin lighting range giving it a white/blue color that's very pleasing to the eye.

Switches in the the doors, trunk, and hood light them up automatically just like a regular production vehicle, I also installed a rocker switch under the driver's side dash to manually turn them on/off in the cockpit.

The great thing about LED strips is that they are easy to wire and easy to install just about anywhere.
