Ok here is the set-up..

Fuel safe tank
Carb
Original Ford fuel pick up unit modified with pump removed and pick up added. Big tube out of pick-up goes to carb the small one remained but is capped

One of those gas caps that you do not need to remove (has the flapper door built in to put gas nozzle into..

Here is the issue.. Stop to fill up with gas. First thing I do is open the trap door in the gas cap to releave trapped air. woosh it is out!

I start to fill her up and everyone is looking at the car... Whoha! gas is spraying out everywhere.. At about 5 gallon mark it seems to build up pressure in the tank and come out the fill area! What a mess. Good thing I am not painted yet...

Any ideas.. Can I use the small line on the pick-up as a vent...

I use the same gas cap as you. I only bought it because it fits so well under the flip top gas filler. If you unscrew it and remove it like a regular cap before pumping your gas ,you shouldn't have that spraying problem.

The small line on the pickup, unless I'm mistaken, is the return for the standard EFI setup. It does not have a safety or one way valve in it. Don't use it as a vent. If you go upside donw, you will dump fuel.

The vent line that goes to the charcol filter assembly has a safety valve in it. This can be used as a vent if your not connected to the filter assy.

If you are not venting the tank, how do you manage to pull fuel out of the tank and not collapse it?

Hank with out the donor set-up and using the fuel safe cell I am at a loss to the charcol set-up..

those with cab's and fuel afe set-ups what did you do for a vent..

I feel my carb is trying to drink a Wendy's Frosty with a straw! It does not act as if it is starving for fuel at all

RacingRob is on to something. The flap top gas cap is nice because it fits nicely under the LeMans cap. But do NOT use the flap for filling the tank. Main problem with these caps is that it doesn't permit the gas nozzle from the station to fully open the little spring loaded flap inside the neck of the tank. That's why you're getting a splash back.

Before you go reinvent the wheel, go back to station and try filling up tank AFTER removing the flap top. If no splash no problem. If you still have splash backs, then you've got some venting issues that need to be addressed.

In CA a lot of the gas pumps have those rubber hoses over the nozzle that are suppose to recover the gas fumes. I can usually fill my tank through the cap without any problems

I'm assuming the cap you are using is not vented, then the tank must be vented somehow. With or without EFI, the fuek cell has a port on the top that allows the stock Mustang one way velve to be installed. A short length of hose from the valve and allowed to hank down provides a vent that wont leak in the event of any movement of the tank or fuel.

Not suggesting the wheel be reinvented, just meerly trying to get to the bottom of the tank.

I run the same cap. I use a holesaw and cut out the flapper in the donor neck. I don't have to remove the cap to fill up anymore.

I know the hole your talking about.. I called fule safe and they said without EFI I needed to block it so for $25 they sent a super block of plate.. too bad I needed to get inside the tank to install...

now looks like the ford part will be needed..

Now of course I ponder ripping out my small block 427 and adding the big block 428.. reason enough for building the coupe!

Do what we used to do when we raced street stock. We would build it and throw it in a beater wagon for the winter and then it would be broke in for the summers events Rock on!
