If I'm not mistaken, the Explorer engines are rated at 215hp. A cam change does alot of good.

Explorers (and Mercury Mountaineers)got V8s starting in '96. If you want to keep a functioning EGR system look for a '96 or '97, the intakes have the internal EGR ports. Starting in '98 (maybe even late '97) the EGR was piped into the exhaust manifold (no hot gases through the intake).

I have a 1997-1/4 Mountaineer Motor with GT-40p heads in my Hunter Cobra and it has a lot of power. I put the trick Flow stage 1 cam in, Edelbrock performer RPM intake, 600 Holley, Mallory Unilight Distributor,MSD Coil and Hunter 4 into 1 headers(they fit great). I think Central Coast sells a similar motor with one of the Ford B or E cams and they advertise 320 hp. I ran my combo on some engine analyzier software and it predicted 321hp at 6000 rpm.

The pre 1997 motors have GT-40 heads and the 1997 and leter motors have P heads. There are some bars cast into the front of the heads three on the Gt-40's and 4 on the GT-40p's. The P heads have a P cast at one corner of the valve cover.
