This is probably a stupid question, but should I use lock/cut washers under the heads of the bolts that screw into the block? I'm just curious about the possibility of the bolts coming loose while the engine is attached to the stand. (I'm using 7/16" grade 8 flange bolts.)

No. Just make sure they're tight. Use flat washers though

2Fast:

Do you mean use flat washers under the head of bolts (between the bolt head and the engine stand arm), or do you mean use flat washers between the engine block and the hollow "fingers" of the engine stand?

Again, forgive it this is a stupid questions.

Use flat washers between head of bolt and stand arm.

There is a lot of tension with that hefty engine trying to pull loose, so I don't think there is anyway that you need lock washers.
