I am heading to a dyno shop tomorrow cuz I wnat to know what I have and possibly get some help making my 180k motor run a bit better.

Any advice out there as to specific questions I should ask or things for which I should watch?

So what is your guess...
1989 5.0 EFI
24lb injectors
65 MM mass air
Edlebrock Performer intake manifolds
MAC shorty headers

The place is New England Dyno and Tuning. Very easy to get to and the folks were pretty nice and walked me through it all. No tuning work was done and the Mustang guys that were there (11) we impressed with the Cobra... The side pipes echoing though the building was amazing. Their website is weak:
web page

At the rear wheels I was 209hp and 259 torque. About on par for the engine... was running very rich (how do I fix that?). Not bad for a 180k motor.

Sean... you have got to come by and check it out.

Drop your fuel pressure, I'm surprised they didn't do that. Did they have a wide band O2 sensor hooked up with the dyno?

If you're still running the stock mass air sensor, and the stock computer, the injectors are the problem - they're mismatched. Either go back to the stock 19lb injectors, or get a mass air meter that is calibrated for the 24's. My stock 91 motor (160K) makes 210 - 215 at the wheel, so yours should do better than that. You won't really need the 24# injectors until you get over the 300 HP mark, but if it was me, I'd go with the larger mass air route.

Thanks for the feedback so far... now for the silly question.

How can I tell if the mass air sensor is stock or not?

Everything came right out of the donor and I am not sure what has been changed and what has not been. Is there a table or something that Ford has that will identify the calibration based ont he numbers stamped in the plastic?

If it is made of cast aluminum and has a Ford part number on it, chances are it's stock. You can measure the inside and the main hole will be around 55-58mm - somewhere in there - less than 60 anyway. The aftermarket ones are usually larger than 70mm. I'd take a look at the C&L 73mm unit calibrated for your 24lb injectors. They are inexpensive and have shown to offer similar or better performance as the rest of the available units.

My 92 did considerably better with only a few more mods. Step up to the C&L 73mm Mass-air, get a fuel pressure regulator, and a 65mm TB (Throttle body). This should get you up in the 220 RWHP when tuned well. That's what mine did anyway, with a ported explorer intake (close to yours, but your is probably a bit better. It had 130K on the clock at the time. Keep the 24lb injectors, they're perfect if you upgrade the TB and mass-air! :D :D

Thanks for the input... I have been travelling and have just now had a chance to check it all.

So, 209 is not that far off, but there are a few things that I should be looking into...

I checked my Chiltons and did not seee how to adjust the fuel pressure.

Ordered a C&L 76MM intake elbow and mass air piece. Very interesting concept where the facoty electronics stay the same, but the inlet tube changes based on how big your injectors are... may start a topic to this effect when I receive it. Seems like a neat system for people who are considering an upgrade path.

I just got the C&L, it is a nice piece. I was wondering what it would do to have it extrude honed. Probably nothing. Just wondering. I thought the same about the possibility of upgrading when I bought it also.
I have the BBK 65MM TB and a B303 cam. Next I am going to install the roller rockers and the underdrive pulleys from March. K&N air filter, and I am getting a TrickFlow intake from the other half for Xmas. Can't wait to unwrap.....

I "had" the 76mm C&L for a while with my B303 and didn't have very good drivability. Maybe my setup, but I bought a Pro-M and the performance at the track and on the street is so much better.

The stock regulator isn't adjustable

thanks John... I will post my luck with the C&L. I love the concept, but we shall see...

Last question on this thread...

What should the air/fuel mixture be through the RPM range... I had a little bit of a spike and saw 10.98 on one shot and 10.68 on another...
too high too low... where should I be.
