When manufactured, they were installed to seal up any leaking during assembly/transit to the engines. Once in a vehicle, they were simply pressed in by the driveshaft yoke. Less time taken and no harm done. That's why you see them in almost every teardown. They do no harm left in. However, if you can remove it, I'd remove it. I never put them back when rebuilding.
