The problem I am having is when the engine is hot( just broken in ) the starter will not even turn over, ten minutes later it starts. It is a brand new starter I used on the 302 that came out, and it always worked without a hitch.
What I'm using now is a 351w bored with 10:1 compression, E.F.I.
thanx for any suggestions seeing as I really don't want to spend another 350$ on a starter.

Two things: battery location and thickness of wire to battery. Try moving the battery to the front and/or use thicker gauge cable and your problem may be solved.

Take care,

Wouldn't hurt to add an extra ground cable between the engine and the frame!

thanx guys, I already have the battery on the footbox and I added a 2 awg ground cable to the starter today. This did occur when I was breaking in the motor and messing with the timing. I have the ffr headers(4 into 4) which got fairly hot, maybe the starter frezzing up was just a temporary thing?

Should a stock starter in good shape be able to handle 10:1 compression?

I have the same setup @ around 10.5:1
The stock starter does have a little difficulty with starting when hot. I put in a $169.00 powermaster starter and it is sweeeeeeeeeet! SOunds pretty cool too.

Try picking up one of the heat sheilds also, my 84 was the same way when I put a 351 in it. Put a sheild on it and improved starting a ton.

$169 is certainly affordable. So maybe a combination of things can be done. The last thing I want to do is go on a cool cruise and have to wait a half hour for things to cool before I can start it.

Thanx for the opinions, I get to drive her tommorow for the first time with the new motor. It sounds like a beastie and can't wait to see what 400 plus feels like.

I am having the same problem with a slightly modified 5.0. I just bought a reuilt high torque starter, definitly bigger than the stock starter and it seems to have solved my problem. Paid $50 canadian for a rebuilt it actual was cheper than my standard starter I returned.

Check with Mr. Alternator (listed in the vendor section) I bought a mini starter from him and it fixed problem and has that NASCAR sound! Mine has 10:1 compression also.
