SOme of the NC guys are considering proposing legislation. Quite frankly our Cobra titleing laws SUCK. We need to get model laws to "copy".

IF you live in a state that has reasonable laws on this issue tell us what you can. What you like, and what you dont like. Email copies of the law if you can to [email protected] Or fax them to 336-940-4041

We already have a copy of Californias SENATE BILL NO. 100 CHAPTER 871. What do you californians think of this new law?? What would you change.

Folks, what we are really interested in is, states that recognise your car for what it is and understand what it is and still let you register as a 1965.....

Of course, if your state is a pain in the A$$ we would like to know that so we will not attempt to copy those laws.

You may not want to copy Louisiana. The process is fairly simple: gather all of your receipts, make sure the VIN on the motor and tranny can be seen, get your MCO, and then contact one of four State Troopers statewide to inspect the car. They will check for stolen parts, assess the value of the car, and make sure it is roadworthy. They allow you to make up your own VIN. Brake tag inspection is not a problem because most speed shops will just fill out the sticker and give to you to put on the car. Sounds good, huh? NOT!

It takes 3-4 months to go through the process. Your car has to be totally complete with paint to start the process. They want ALL receipts so yu can pay 10% sales tax on your build. The car is titles as a 2002 Component Car.

Thank God I was a little more creative with my registration. ;)

IMHO the california one is not one to model. While it is an improvement from what we had its still pretty lame. I know of one gentleman that got it titled and smogged as a 65 but the way it is supposed to work is the car is titled as a 2002 and smogged as a 1965, thats only half the battle. If you move or sell it to someone out of state I am pretty confident you will have to smog it as a 2002 good luck passing those requirements excuse me sir I don't see your obdII electronics. Then you would probably have to try to retitle it to get it registered that sounds like a big can of worms.

in addition since it is titled as a 2002 you pay property taxes on it I am an Idaho native and think property or use taxes on your car is completly crazy. At least if its titled as a 1965 its depreciated out its just an annoying unjust fee.

I will most likely be trailering my car back to gods country (Idaho) to title mine. 5% sales tax there, and its titled as a 65. If I did not have conections there I would be pretty tempted to run to AZ that I here also has reasonable laws.
however I think the Ideal place is Oregon 0 sales tax and I think they have no problem calling it a 65 as well, hmm I have friends on the border in Medford, I may have to look into that.

So far Oregon isn't bad. You only have to meet emissions for the year your car resembles. So you title it 100% truthfully as a "1965 Cobra Replica" and you never have to go to DEQ for testing.

Minnesota isn't bad, they title the car as the year it represents. Since the MSO says 1965 427 Roadster, that's what it is titled as. Emission laws? They got rid of them a couple years ago, they found they weren't making the air any better and were costing the state too much money. I haven't gone through inspection yet, but the form has blanks for vin #, engine #, trans #, control #, rivets (?), and other. That's it. I'm going to call them first to make sure I have everything the way they want it before I go. Sounds easy though.

I plan on registering #2283 with another nation....well kind of, The Cherokee Nation. I tagged my "you guessed it" Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Cherokee Nation and it was $600.00 less than Oklahoma, plus they were real nice folks to deal with!

I went to my local DMV office and they told me it would be registered as a "1965" replica and would cost $67. They told me all they have to do is inspect the VIN and that is it. No equipment inspection and they don't even care what kind of motor is in it. I've got the official DMV form and all that is required is a receipt for the motor and the kit paperwork. The body just has to "resemble" some earlier vehicle to be classified as a replica.

I just finished this process this week in Kansas. Inspection at the Kansas Highway Patrol. They only checked for engine and trans numbers. He couldn't see the trans number and took my word for it, with a car lift in the next stall over. ($10 inspection fee) I then took the paperwork to the tag office. 20 minutes later I was done. Paid sales tax on $10,520 invoice from FFR and $400 in donor receipts. Tax value was assessed on the $10,920 in receipts. A full years worth of taxes, tags, substation fees, etc, etc, etc. all added up to $183.30. Sales tax of 5.9% and I was out the door for $750.64, including a personalized license plate. Overall, I felt pretty good. When I bought a new 1989 Mustang GT, the taxes and tags were $489, although the property tax rates have come down considerably in the last few years.
See ya, it's time to go drive. :D :D
