My daughter and I flew on that plane last year. Truly an amazing experience. Sad that one of the few remaining was destroyed. Tragic that so many lost their lives.

I am nearly certain this plane was supposed to eventually make way to the Planes of Fame museum near my house.

Just a few years ago I began and amazing fascination of WW2 and I was hoping to see it.

Larger planes like this one fly directly over my house when landing at the Chino airport.

I think they are going to find some sort of major mechanical problem. I read in the paper today that the pilot had over 7300 hours flying B17's. Seems like if it was at all possible to bring it in he would have been able to do it.

He may have had medical issue - who knows at this point

Tragic loss indeed. I saw this plane at Osh Kosh. Even with a complete loss of power in the number 4 engine, a B-17, especially a non fully loaded B-17 can easily remain airborne.

There has to be more to it than just a single engine failure. Unfortunately events like this are typically a chain of events that went wrong, and not just a single event.

RIP to the soul's onboard, and Nine-O-Nine.

I have a neighbor who has some experience in a B17. This is his comment on it. I found it interesting so decided to pass it on.

"Tragic, I used to do that very type of ride program with our B-17, Fuddy Duddy out of Elmyra. I’m guessing they had an engine fail and could not “feather” it which causes a stunning amount of vibration and drag making it very difficult to fly. The engine was also likely on fire. The pilot radioed in that he couldn’t climb and was attempting to return. Even with 3 operable engines, (at 1000 HP each) the amount of drag produced by an unfeathered engine negates their power advantage. Flying aircraft of that era is and has always been dangerous. Most people don’t know that the US had 45,000 fatalities during WW2 during flight training in the states. I flew in our B-17, PBY Catalina, and DC-3 from 1985-2008 and feel fortunate to have had that awesome experience, but also to have had only one minor incident, (a collapsed nose gear on our PBY while landing). In that 23 years I had approximately 100 hours in the air."
