Just got finished making sure it works.

Here's the mounting pad using Streetrodpainters "epoxy rivet" technique.

The big blue dots are holes in the 1/4" plate that are generously countersunk on the outside, so the 3M stuff forms a rivet. In addition, there are dovetail shaped notches all around the perimeter. I justr have to clean up the excess and it's done. They weigh less than half of the gas strut alternative, they cost the same and they never wear out.

What do you think?

Does it take two people to close your hood?

Very innovative idea, especially using the 'epoxy rivet' technique. Just a few questions about the struts - do they self-lock into position and is this just for personal use or is it going to become an FFR custom kitbuilder option that you are asking for an opinion about??? Either way, it has potential.

Once the car is off the jackstands, I can reach both to "unlock" them. They do pop "over center" when opening, so they self latch. Then it's lift the hood slightly and push one at a time to close. One drawback is to be sure there's clearance under the hood, in the engine compartment, to let them drop down. They may not work well in the trunk for that reason. It's all off-the-shelf parts, except the pounting pads, which are 1/4" x 1.25" 6061, drilled and tapped.

Any reason you went with 2 supports? I would think 1 would do the job. My Pass. side is going to be crowded with Forte's degas tank and overflow tube.
Thanks

Joe,

Very Cool Looking!

I like Streetrods Epoxy Rivet technique. Excellent way to ensure a strong bond. Did you not fiberglass over the epoxy bonded plate afterwards?

Good to see that the hinge seems to have gone on well. How does the hood alignment look?

I didn't investigate using just one since I didn't want to introduce a twisting type load on the hood hinge mounting point.

Duane: I'll probably do a skim coat of 3M fairing filler, but I don't think I'll need any further reinforcement. The plates have 3 large countersunk holes plus the back is roughed up with a #24 disk and I added "dovetail" grooves around the perimeter. I think it's on for keeps.
