Anyone know if I can just swap in the 28 spline gears in place the 31 spline gears that I currently have in my rear end from an 04 SVT Cobra?

I checked with Max and he doesn't have the answer, just the part number for the 28 spline. I found them on a website and they look the same, but that doesn't tell you anything.

http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/categories/posi-service-parts/products/product-5755.html

28 Spline axles are quite a bit cheaper than the 31 spline and I can't imagine them breaking in a 2300lb car.

And the $100 for the rebuild kit vs. the $500 for a new Torsen is a good bit of change.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Can't you just buy the 31 spline inner CV stub axle and use everything else from the Tbird axles from there out?
Didn't Sergio go through this with his SuperCobra build?

Do you have the Cobra Axles/CV's? If so, you could have Dutchman axles make up a custom axle with the splines for the inner stub axle CV and the outer Tbird CV splines for each side. Just a couple options you might consider.

Bob,

Thanks for the reply. Sergio actually went with Drive Shaft Shop for his axles. They are great with super reinforced materials, but you pay for that greatness.

I plan to go with a decent power producing motor (read over 500hp) so I probably should go with something a little better than the T-Bird axles, just in case I want to stick a sticky tire on there. DBRU has axles that are supposedly twice as strong as the T-Bird for a third the price of the Drive Shaft Shop.

I may just bite the bullet and get the Drive Shaft Shop option, I just wanted to see what was out there and what people thought.

Thanks again

Kevin ,check with Max at 5 Star, the inner gears ( spider and side gear) need to be made for 31 spline axles , from that point you need the cobra 31 spline plunge joint and from there get the DBRUS stronger axles.
That should get you on the way to extra strength you're looking for.

Sergio can tell you what you need to do to utilize the 31 spline diff. It's not that bad once you get the picture.

Your best bet short of doing the Torsen swap, is to get a used t-loc that is for 28 spline IRS, or even a new one from Max (new they are around $200 or so). You will never find the inner cv's that you need to use that diff. Believe me, I went down this road myself, as I had a brand new '04 pumpkin awhile back that I wanted to use for myself. the only ones I could find came from complete rear takeouts, where I'd have to buy the whole assembly, then part it out. None of the parts suppliers I checked have rebuilt halfshafts available either. I thought that would be a cheap way to get them, but no dice there either! I ended up selling the pumpkin to someone with a late Cobra that blew theirs at the drag strip. Since I already have an aluminum one anyway, I'll just rebuild it with a Torsen next time it's apart.
