I have a Holley Street Warrior that came on my Blueprint engines 306. I cannot get the thing dialed in. It runs incredibly rich. The floats were way high. I’ve brought them into adjustment. The mixture screws were at 1/4 and 1 and 3/4. I’ve put them both at 1 and 1/2. Still running really rich. The idle is high and the curb idle screw is backed off entirely. I turned the mixture screws in to 1 turn out on each with no real change. I haven’t used my vacuum gauge yet to tune for maximum vacuum. I checked everywhere for vacuum leaks and found none. I’ve been told to disconnect the Vacuum advance to help lower the idle. Clamped it shut with no effect. Going to call Holley tomorrow, but looking at other carb options. Anybody running an Edelbrock? What model and do you like it? Starting to wonder if my Holley is a Monday morning or Friday afternoon build. So far it’s used 5 gallons of gas to try to tune the carb and completely carbon fouled the first set of plugs to where it would no longer start. Starting to feel frustrated. Thanks

Did you try smaller main jets?

What is your fuel pressure? Should be 5-6 max. I can’t imagine how it could be running that rich out of the box.

I’ve had a lot of experience tuning the Holley carbs. If you want to call me I can give you my number.

Not yet. I haven’t been inside the carb. I think I’m going to be opening it up though. I’m not getting anywhere with external settings.

I had a 750 edelbrock on my car, It would not go around a hard corner it would flood in a strait line they can't be beat. I changed to a 750 manual secondary double pumper Brawler and I got better gas mileage and I can go around a corner has hard as I want.

Here's a few things to check in addition to fuel pressure:
1. Electric choke setting. Make sure choke opens completely and the fast idle cam screw is not holding primary throttle plates open.
2. Base timing set to 10 degrees. Disconnect vacuum advance line from the ported vacuum carb port on side of carb and plug the port.
3. Set idle mixture screws to 1/2 turn out each.
4 Set curb idle screw closed and then open it until you see throttle arm/ plate open a tiny amount.
5. If it will run and it's not chugging black smoke, let it warm up and set curb idle to 900 - 1000 rpm.
6. Close idle mixture screws all the way in and the engine should stall. That's a good thing. Open them back up to 1/2 turn and adjust them to between 1/4 and 1 turn out. That's the normal range of operation for best idle.
7. If it will not stall when idle screws are closed, there is fuel getting in from someplace beside the idle circuit. Some possibilities: Lose or leaking power valve, loose main jets, flooded float chamber due to fuel getting past the float needle and seat. A problem on the secondary side that mirrors the potential of problems on the primary side.

Greg, it’s running off the Holley red pump that’s supposed to be 7psi max. Came as a package. No return line. I don’t think it’s a pressure issue as once I adjusted the floats it’s not coming out the site holes like it was.

OK that's good. Must be in the carb. That carb should work fine. I ran a Holley Street Avenger for years, bascially the same as the Warrior.

I also run a Holley DP. Love them. I chased a similar problem (idle adjustment) for a long time. Finally just learned to live with it. Two summers ago I was changing to an open plenum spacer and had the carb on a stand on my bench. I was visually inspecting all the external linkage and discovered that the choke fast idle screw (the one you can't see behind the choke heater) was not in alignment with the fast idle cam face. This allowed the adjustment screw to go beside the cam. I would never have seen it while on the engine. A slight tweak with pliers and all my problems were solved. I am not saying this is your problem but I am saying the carb has many points of adjustment that have to work in unison to achieve the desired outcome. Before you tear into the carb make sure all the parts are working correctly. Been dealing with Holley carbs since I bought my first Corvette in 1966. I like them alot. PS: the Open plenum spacer made a HUGE difference in driveability. Good luck.
