Use SB100
1. Take invoice amd certificate of origin to DMV
pay tax on kit and registration fee ($1400 in my case) You will leave the DMV with some papers nad red sticker for your window. You can now drive on the street.
2. You'll receive a Special construction number in the mail (mine took 3 days) and you can then call the CHP for a VIN number assignment.(mine was 4 days after I received the SPCN # in the mail). Takes about 1/2 hour. They'll put some numbers on it. You can then call BAR for smog excemption (2 days in my case). They fill out a form and give it another sticker. I drove straight to the DMV and got my plates. NO headlamp/brake inspection. No safety check or wipers or backup lamp required. Hope this helps.

I keep hearing conflicting stories on brake/light inspections, seems like it's a little hit-and-miss depending on the DMV office's familiarity with specialty car registration. If anyone has documentation from the CA DMV that specified that a brake/light inspection is not required, it would be very helpful.
