I have purchased a stock long block 302 and also have purchased an Edelbrock intake and Edelbrock 600 cfm carburator. I would like to know what my options are for putting in a cam that would give me about 280 hp? Also what kind of headers would I use on the engine?

Where do you want to make 280hp? Wheels? Flywheel?
If you are talking flywheel, An Air gap, Performer RPM or Weiand stealth intake plus a Ford roller "B-303" or better and a Holley 650 makes about 280 FWhp with shorty headers. Deduct 10-15 hp for your carb. Since you have stock heads find a cam under 220 duration and .5 lift with a longer exhaust duration.
I would use long tube headers you'll get a gain of 10-15 over shortys I suspect.

I, m pretty sure the syock 225 hp versions make close to that on the engine dyno. I use a wieand Stealth Holley 780 dp and an x cam the car is a 78 Fairmont runs 12.2 to 12.40 all the time at 2900lbs . Find the online calculator to figure the hp I think it takes 300+ to go that quick at that weight. Bob

Take a look at the Comp Cams Extreme Energy XE264HR Hydraulic Roller Cam #35-349-8 (212/218 .512/.512 114 LSA). That would be a good start. (You will need to change springs with this cam).

With a close to stock engine, you will get best power with 1 5/8" shorty headers. The spec racers have found that a totally stock engine actually makes best power with the stock Ford exhaust manifolds. 1 5/8" shorties work best with mild modifications like you are planning.

Which manifold did you get? Performer or Performer RPM?

With an RPM manifold you will make about 300 HP with the cam I mentioned. Check this article for a dyno test with that combination:

You could also try using 1.7 ratio rocker arms with the stock cam, look at the stock heads in this article:

Guys, Thank you for all the information. I have the performer intake and I will read all the articles you suggested. Where is the bes place to purchase shorty headers?
