Is the "backing plate" the same size in an automatic angine as in a manual? (I'm referring to the thin steel plate between the engine and bellhousing on a 351w)

No, they are differant. The one for an auto is actually two pieces, so you can access the converter bolts after assembly.

hmmmm, my engine was mated to an auto, but I think its only one piece, better go check. Anyway, thank you for the reply, might as well buy a new one from Fortes (I think they're only 40.00)
