greetings and happy thanksgiving all !!! So here is the dilemma , I know nothing and need to swap out a c4 for an overdrive unit . Aod durable but ..no electonic controls, aode better, 4r70w, is this an aode with different electronics and gearing?
what I do know :
Aod has cable for control and odd shift pattern for manual
all the others will need a majic box , from Baumann I think
what I want :
normal shift pattern , tunability
durability

It would all depend on what engine combo you are running. I myself like the AOD because no electronics are needed other than hooking up a TV cable to the throttle. The AOD does have a poorly designed valvebody from the factory when you want to manually shift it, however there is a company producing a valvebody that corrects this flaw. Check Performance Automatics website. They offer all types of transmission combos and also offer a valve body called the AOD Hold valve body which allows manual control of the trans without harming the transmission.

The 4R70W is an all around better box. Takes more torque, has a wide ratio gear set (higher first gear than the other two) and with the use of Performance Automatic's Smart Shift you can control everything with a single box and a twist of a knob. It's the same box as PCS's Simple Shift, but you can get a package deal (trans and controller) via Performance Automatic.

My Lentech Street Turdinator Plus AOD just died for the second time in less than 5000 miles, so I'm looking for a replacement. I'm leaning heavily toward a 4R70W with a Baumann controller. Now I just have to find one...I think I'm going to just get a used one from a junkyard this time instead of paying megabucks for a rebuilt one from a shop who supposedly knows what they're doing but sold me (twice :cursing a big pile of crap instead.

For a Ford SB, you'll need 4R70W from a 3.8L Mustang or a 5.0L 4x2 Explorer in order for the bellhousing to match up to the block. From my research, 98-02 is the optimal year range. Newer than '02 have some upgrades, but don't have provisions for a VSS or speedo cable.

01 would be the last year for the 5.0 explorer they went to the 4.6 in 02
