I am thinking about putting a winch on my trailer. I think this would allow a more controlled loading of the car onto the trailer. Are you using manual or electric? What capacity winch should I get?

Yeah, I got one. Works great. A little overkill. I got the Warne HS9500i. You only need like the 3500 series. I wanted one that could pull my 4X4 out of the mud and pull the spec car on the trailer.

If I had to do it over again, I would get a smaller one.

I had a small Warn winch, mounted about 18" above the bed of my enclosed trailer.

With a 1500 lb. capability, it was enough to pull my 2250 lb. race car with no problem up a 15 degree incline. It REALLY helped with pulling a fully loaded large tool box into the trailer!

With an open trailer, it's not needed as much, but still handy. Make sure you weld the mounting bolts/nuts, or make it removable, or you may find the winch missing some day (don't ask).

If you go the electric winch direction what is its power..? I would think the power leads need to be beefy and it is a long way from the battery?

My Wench is great at pushing while I steer!

Ok she watches as I do both but it was worth the response when she sees this!

I've sold my trailer, but it was a home made job from a boat trailer and a mechanical hand winch. I was able to get the Cobra, 52 Ford F2 pick up and an 87 Mercury Marquis (without engine) on. Not at the same time :D

I welded a c-channel bracket and base plate to the front of the trailer so I could install a 2 position hand winch 3200 lbs pull. I got the biggest winch because it was only $20 more than one half the pulling power. Made it removable so I can install it only if needed, it will remain in the back of the tow car. I added a place to put a spare tire and I also added some lights which are also removable incase I ever have to load or unload in the dark. Does this mean your going to Ohio in June? I know I can get off to go. :D
