Thought I'd post this and see if anyone else ran into this. I plan on calling Classic Instruments later today.

I have the Classic reverse 180mph speedo. I followed the directions to the letter last night to calibrate:

1. Verified that dip switches 1-3-4-5 were set to on (calibration mode).

2. Followed a vehcile with an accurate speedo traveling at 60mph for several miles.

3. Noted that my speedo indicated either 75mph or 76mph to the pace car 60mph.

4. Stopped and set the dip switches according to the manual for a speedo indicating 75mph (1234-678).

5. Followed the pace car to verify and this time it read 55mph to the pace car 60mph.

6. Tried again this time setting the dip switches for speedo indicating 76mph (12345---)

7. Followed the pace car to verify and this time it read 54mph to the pace cars 60mph.

I have 17" wheels, 275/40 tires, stock T-5, and 3.73 rear gears.

Anyone else run into this. I am certain that the Classic speedo is indicating either 75 or 76mph to the pace cars 60mph. I followed for several miles to be sure. FWIW: The pace car is an almost new VW Passat that I suspect is highly accurate.

I considered that I might "fool" the Classic Speedo by setting the switches for a speedo indicating 70mph but wasn't sure what that might do to accuracy. There are no other symptoms or problems with this or any other guage.

Anyone else run into this and/or speak with Classic about this?

BTW: Thanks to everyone that has been helping me sort 2961 out! The punch list is getting shorter!

After I did EXACTLY what their book said,, , , , after making the adjustment, it was off about the same amount the other direction.

THe guy at Classic said he had NEVER heard of this before.

I picked a setting about half way between , , , , ,And, it worked. My speedo is within one mph.

Ive had No more problems.

Wish I could be a little more specific, but, its been about 15 months.

Boy is Classic pulling your legs, their elec speedo's get increasingly off by up to 30% at 120MPH and you CANNOT calibrate them thru the full range. Spend the time and try to prove that statement wrong. Kinda reminds me of the 70's vette's running an actual 100MPH and reading 124MPH, eh!

Grumpy

(edit: the white crown vic i've been know to drive was calibrated for accuracy to supposedly with 1-2MPH but against a freshly tuned radar gun it will be off 3-6MPH in the full range. most officers will give you 5MPH advantage unless it's a school zone.)

My speedo is pretty close at the 110 mph range, or the tach is off too. I can compute what speed I should have just ran by the tach and it agrees with the speedo.

Grumpy, I have not seen what you are saying in my speedo.

BUT, the recommended dip switch settings WOULD NO WORK.

I found that the mile markers work good for a general set up . But a GPS set for MPH( not KNOT). works super. My laptop running street atlas will give me a display of 60.00 MPH and heading if you want to swing you compass at the same time. This is much closer than a radar gun.

Classic tech support simply said in this case try setting as if it were indicating 5mph slower at 70mph instead of the true 75/76mph speed that is indicating and that *might* do the trick.

He also said don't recall ever hearing anything like this before! Hmmm...

Hi Matt, Mine did the same thing. I calibrated the speedo based on the speed I ran while following another car going 60. Set the dips per Classic, and it was still of about 5 mph. So I readjusted it until It was within a mile at 60. I never thought of checking at other speeds as well now to ensure a decent range of accuracy. My odometer however seems to be going faster than it should. I seem to be logging more miles than I’m driving. I haven’t checked this yet, but will once my car is on the road again.
