I talked to Jesper today about my IRS rod ends and he mentioned that some of the new chassis upgrades were available for retrofit to earlier kits. Has anyone done this ? I have a powder coated frame so I'm wondering if there is a good bolt-on solution so I don't have to grind the frame up. The foot wells will be smaller still I guess, does anyone have any experience with this ?
Am I the only one who thinks protecting his legs is a good idea?
How much are they selling the upgrades for? I would think the job would be hard to do with a finished car, but if someone is building, that would not be a hard job.
Jesper said $100 for the footbox tubing (for both sides I assume) and $25 for the trunk hoop. I would want to weld mounting tabs to these and powder coat the assembled pieces then bolt them to the frame. Possible ?
You could bolt the trunk hoop, but for the footbox protection to work, it would need to be welded. Using bolts might be unsafe, but ask Jesper to be sure.
The trunk hoop can be done , I make a kit that uses a bent and welded tube that bolts in with stainless brackets and was designed to be done on a finished car, takes a couple of hours. Kit with all hardware, instructions and shipping $100
Bent this hoop for a friend that had his frame powder coated. All bent by hand by sticking it in the dash 2X3 hole and bending a bit at a time. Stuffed cloths in the hole to protect the hoop from marring. Used the aluminum piece as a guide for the proper arc. Welded the drilled tabs onto the hoop and then POR 15'd it.
you gotta love ffr's pricing schedule. they charged me 45.00 plus shipping for the trunk hoop retrofit kit (which by the way; you have to weld into your frame). i guess that i should have dealt with jesper!!!!!!
Galt got the trunk hoop from FFR, but it didn't come with all the plates and bolts to make it work. I bought Russ's and it was a easy to bolt in. I think it took me an hour or so to install Russ' trunk hoop kit.
what is the NEW footbox protection? this is the first i have heard of it. i ordered my car when they announced the price increase in the fall of last year. wish i would have waited, the old style car is actually gonna cost more for the upgrades to bring it up to the mark2 design, not to mention the better seats. but this is typical for me, dollar short and a day late.lol. vince
Vince, the foot box protection is a 1 1/2" bent tube that bacicly follows the bottom outside edge of the foot box floor.Goes from the 2x2 frame under your feet, forwards to the front of the box then curved over to the 4" round tube.
ok my car does have that part, thats a relief. thanks guys, vince
