So i have an appointment for the smog ref. My question is what do i need to pass. They wont give me any info. I have the pcv valve and a hose going to the intake. Do i need a certain brand hose? Anything else?

You are only required to me the 1965 Smog Regulations, which is a PCV vale. Hose brand is not important.

so they just do a visual inspection?

No. They will install a "sniffer" in the exhaust pipe to record the emissions. It will likely fail - no biggie. Then they will issue you a smog exempt sticker which they will place somewhere in the engine compartment. The referee will give you all your paperwork which you will take back to the DMV to close out the registration process and issue you plates

I don't think they always run the car - I think it depends on where you go. Mine was a visual only.

When I did my BAR referee inspection at the San Jacinto College Automotive School, they checked that the hoses were the proper type for emission control purposes, and that a PCV valve was installed. He said that that was all that was required, since it was being tested by " the year body type 1965 that the car most closely resembled". NOT ENGINE YEAR !--but Mike, you probably know that already. He also never checked the pipe emissions. Jim

Here's how I did it ...

When mine was checked... I needed two hoses, one with pcv from valve cover to base of carburetor or intake and the other from valve cover to the air cleaner. Both hoses must be for emission system only. I picked them up at auto parts store and were specific to emission system. When I was at smog referee, I did not have to start car, but rather just open hood so the referee could see that I had the above correct hoses and that they were connected correctly. The referee then attached my sticker high on my firewall and suggested I cover it with plexi so that the ink on it would not be mistakenly removed. I then drove to DMV with paperwork from all 3 inspections, a big smile and received my plates.......

Yeah, I forgot about the "vent" hose from the other valve cover to the air cleaner. As long as you use "fuel/emission" line you wil be safe.

Remember, in CA the Smog Check is a part of the registration process and the testing results are directly linked to the DMV computer. Hence, you need to be "tested" in order to register your vehicle. Whether they actually use the sniffer or not is not an issue, you will fail the test as a gross polluter and then become "exempt".
