Changing from the donor guages to ultra lites.
A couple of things i'm not sure about. It seems
fuel guage 4318 is the closet in the ohm range
for the donor sender, is this what people are using? The electric speedo hooks up to the vss sensor but the instructions are kinda vague.Any
advice on this.. i really like the look of the guages.Getting the rear 2.73's replaced with 3'55's this weekend. Can't wait!

speedo is easy!! one wire to ground on the speed sensor the other to the gauge, it should also go to the vss lead on the EEC module for beter drivability. If y memory serves me that also the same fuel gauge I use.

Bringing this up again because I will be changing to the autometer gauges at some point too. My donor was an 88 with no cruise control, and I dont have a VSS. My speedo cable just goes directly into the tranny. Does the VSS mount between the tranny and the cable? And is this a dealer part?
Thanks,
RR

I bought a VSS from a local Ford parts house, it just plugs in between the tranny and speedo cable. My used Mustang parts guy had several VSS I could've bought from him cheaper, I found out later. Hope that helps.

Rob,are you using the electric speedo or the mechanical.I used an 88' for a donor and had to have a cable made when I was using the mechanical speedo and no VSS.If I remember right the tranny end of your cable is triangular in shape and the Autometer Ultralite speedo has a square drive,so that the stock cable wont work.

Did you just "tee" the input to the speedo, or did you use the buffered output of the speedo to feed the ECC?

The Autometer speedometer has a "buffered" output on it - I think it's there for feeding GM EEC units. I saw the comment about feeding the VSS signal to the EEC for better drivabliity, and I was wondering if the buffered output was used, or if the signal was just split between the two inputs. I'm all for drivability - I plan to put 6 figures on this thing in the next 3 years

Similar question here. Is it necessary to keep the speed sensor output to the computer? I don't think the computer needs the buffered output from the electronic speedo - it already has the feed directly from the speed sensor. Anyone else dealt with this?

Hold on now, I am confused. I just bought my speedo today, I cut the retaining clip off and took a section out of the housing and clamped my existing cable in which it fit perfectly.

I drove around a bit today and it seemed to be okay I haven't checked it officially.

This whole thing was real easy, so why is everyone using electric,

Am I going to have an accuracy problem down the road?

Careful, the VSS only plugs in if you have a VSS speedo cable.
