Anybody have an opinion good or bad about either one of these? They are both priced about the same from Jegs and I'm not sure which one would be the better unit or if they both are good or both suck. Am I correct in thinking I could get one of these, the matching coil, and an 85 distributor and that would take care of my ignition system? I'm going carbureted. Thanks Folks.

I'd never buy another Accel product for my car. Had the unit you are thinking of and it fried. Went with the msd and haven't had a problem since. Whatever unit you go with make sure you mount it outside of the engine bay. Heat is the number one killer of any system you get. Good Luck!

I never used the accel unit so I can't give information on that. I've used both the Crane and MSD setups. The crane is MUCH better. It DEFINATELY provided more power. (The car I put it on had a really bad carb, The MSD made it idle better and increased the top speed, the crane did both things much better)

I had the MSD first, and fried the box (my fault, can't blame MSD for that) and decided to switch to the Crane because it was cheaper and had the built in rev limiter (I don't consider those "pills" a real nice rev limiter).

I've had good luck with several MSD's on both carbed and EFI cars. I haven't tried the Crane, but I agree you should avoid the Accel stuff. Very poor quality and doesn't last very long from the little experience I have with them. As an extreme example, I installed a set of their plugs in my stock '69 351W and after 4000 miles I developed a bad miss I could not track down. After several hours of frustration I swapped in the stock Motorcraft plugs which solved the problem. The next time I was at the parts shop I bought the plugs from the guy behind the counter said yeah those things are crap; usually they last about 2500 miles. I just looked at him and shook my head. If they can't make a spark plug that works, they need to give it up. I've had similar experiences with their electronics...
