I have a sign in my office that says "There's no such thing as a stupid question" maybe I'll break the rules here, but I'm new to this..thoroughly hooked...and don't want to get started wrong. I will take delivery of my donor car this Saturday. About 2 hours ago I helped 5 other guys unload a FFR kit for a friend who is building his 14th cobra. I know I can rely on him for many questions but I thougt I'd get a few second opinions as well. I plan on getting the FFR headers... QUESTION.. What combination of carb, intake man. and heads are best suited to the FFR headears for max HP/$? Thanks in advance, Mike

I am not sure what kind of HP this combination will get, but this is what I am going with. 5.0 block, bored .030 over, B303 cam, reworked stock heads(for now), MAC shorty headers, Edelbrock AirGap intake, and a Barry Grant/Speed Demon 525 carb. I hope this ends up being a good combination.

I've been working on this question for several months now and first we have to examine your question. You say 'max horsepower'. I've figured out that there is a comfort zone where drivability can be maintained and power should be 'adequate'. If I need more power it will come from nitrous. I'm going with an Edelbrock 750-cfm carb on an Edelbrock RPM air gap intake. will be GT-40P and the cam will be a B303 or E303 from Ford racing and BBK 1 and 5/8" headers. With a few other factors considered I should be close to 300bhp at the flywheel. Since I'm changing the gears to 3.55's this combo should give me a good combination of 'off the lights' sparkle and long distance cruising. I feel it is important to have some low down grunt so that from 15000 to 2000 rmp you can still pull hard. My Porsche 911 Turbo had HUGE torbu lag and until you hit 3000rpm it was just like any other car. After that it was a monster but this meant that if I was expecting some action I had to keep the revs up.
After speaking to LOTS of people I have learned that balancing components is the trick. Its pointless putting on an 800cfm carb with the stock cam, headers and cylinder heads. The engine can't breath so the carb is wasted. Similarly if you have 1 3/4" headers and trickflow cylinder heads plus a full race cam but have a weeny for a carb you can't supply enough fuel/air mixture so the power never materializes.

Hope this helps although there is not enough time here to go into all of the details. Do you have the ford racing and edelbrock catalogs? The Edelbrock one gives some great information along with bhp expectations for various combo's. I found it most useful when figuring out what to do. Also, there is a book called 'Building Horsepower' by David Vizzard that is superb.

Mike,
getting my kit in about 3 weeks. Have been reading this site for a month or more, and doing lots of research on suppliers/vendors. I'm in SoCal also, so let's stay in touch. Good luck!
