I've been through four engines so far, from the worn-out donor 5.0, a crate 302/340 HP (Split wide open after four years of heavy use), a mild 331, and now my "BiG" 331 (465 HP).

I would vote for a very mild 331, so you get a little more easy torque, and go mild on the parts. Torquey cam, AFR 165 heads, Dual-plane intake, you are good to go.

Well, um, yeah! Much too much fun! But then again, mine has been on the track since 2006, and run hard. Learned a few motor building lessons along the way.

FYI, if anyone is looking for a 302 there's a post under the SBF section for a stock 302 disassembled and hot tanked, selling for $400 out of RI I think. I'd consider it if it was closer.

edit: actually in MD, not RI as previously posted if that makes a difference. only 7 hrs from me...tempting.
