I've just started. So far, I've drilled for both F-panels, the firewall, and the two small triangular trunk pieces with approx. 3" rivet spacing with one Bosch titanium bit. It's still drilling, but it might only do about 20 more holes till it's gone. I've been thinking about getting a good sharpener. One bit could probably do the whole car with a good sharpener. I have a cheap one now that doesn't work well at all.

Dont waste your money on the "titanium" bits, get black cobalt ones. They are 1 dollar and change at the local true value hardware store and I have only needed more because I broke some from being stupid. They just dont seem do go dull.

I bought 6 titanium drill bits and used 3 only, I broke one and my son the other one. I used a small cup (the cover of a Spray paint can) with some engine oil, every time that I need to drill, dip the tip of the bit and use it. I f you notice the bit getting dry, put more oil.

I tried at least 10 different brands / types of bits and found the most success with the Black & Decker Bullet bits. Before I tried them, I would have bet that B&D bits would have been junk, but I sure was wrong.

I used the double bits that you buy at the hvac wholesale house. They are abour 2" long and when they go bad, you just reverse it to the other end. They are the best I have ever used. I drill alot of sheet metal and aluminum. They come in a pack of ten (20 heads) for about 12 bucks. (my wife likes em too!)

ironbrad,
I've posted this several times but it just had never caught on. You probably have a Metal Builbing supply house around you, if so stop by and pick up their "sheeter" bits fthat they use as starter bits. They are usually only have 3/8" length twist on the end and most of the time they are short and double ended. You literally cannot break them and they last forever at the price of a standard bit. If you tell em what you're doing they'll probably give you a 1/2 doz just in hopes you'll stop by with the car when your done.

If you have a local Aircraft supply store go ther and pick up a pack of #30 Cobalt bits. Especially if you have a tendency of not oiling between drilling holes, and drill twice as many as FFR suggests, or use a high speed air drill. I do all of these and go through a bit every once in a while. Take it and through it away.

I got mine online from Aircraft Spruce, I bought 3 packs of 3 #30 bits, I'd say that it was worth the money. Aircraft Spruce - Cobalt Drill Bits

After 2-3 auto projects, I had a whole drawer full of dull bits. I was planning on buying a new set of bits for this project. But I decided to buy the Drill Doctor bit sharpener instead.

I am pretty impressed. 30 minutes after opening the box, I had a whole drawer full of razor sharp bits. It's like butter! Well worth the $110 I spent for it. Wish I'd bought one a long time ago. I'll buy 2-3 quality #30 bits, and just keep sharpening them.

Harbor Freight, you can get a packet full of double sided jobber bits for just a few dollars. I havn't oiled anything and they're holding up fine. I've only tossed one so far because it was just a little dull, and they're so short you can't break them.

LMAO...

I went on a hunt on Friday for Drill Bits...

Got two 'Superior Strength and Longevity' drill bits, and a Black and Decker Bullet 'kit'.

One of the generic bits I bought was dead after drilling out just ONE of the F panels...

ROTFL

The B&D Bullet showed no signs of wear after the second F panel.

Oh well.

One of the downsides with living over here, the hardware stores are USELESS!!

I'll be in Florida in about 10 days, will be sure to stock up on some bits while I am over there!

one thing i learned about drill bits, is the harder you push down on the drill , like how i catch myself because i want it done know, the faster you will ruin the bit.they are not made to last forever, just take your time .vince
