  2. Getting ready....

    Factory Five Roadsters
You guys are both goin??!! Damn, i'm jealous!!!! I've only got about 800 miles on the mk1, so I wouldn't dare make an attempt from NJ. I am debating flying to the London show this year, or trailering my unpainted car out there. Either way, I can't wait to see you guys again. Enjoy Texas...
  3. Replacement starter install issue.

    Factory Five Roadsters
Done! Easy solution was to carefully grind down the raised are between the arrows so the plate sits flush. I could have done this or opened up the mounting hole 1/10". New starter cranks MUCH better!!! Hopefully this thread will help someone down the road. Thanks guys!- Mike
  4. Replacement starter install issue.

    Factory Five Roadsters
Dave the pinion gears are the same for 157 and 164. I verified this with Powermaster. Your starter on summit shows the attached specs. It is good for both 157 and 164 flywheels. The problem with that starter is it has a 3/4" pinion offset. My flywheel is only offset by 3/8". I think I can use...

Replacing it because it's 18yrs old and experiencing sporadic heat sink issues. I will call Mike. He provided me with my drivetrain in 2001. Thanks!!--Mike
  6. Replacement starter install issue.

    Factory Five Roadsters
Ok..so here is the update... I purchased the 2 new starters and neither would engage the flywheel. All three seemed identical. They were a very tight fit into the motor plate. I have now come to find that not only as I knew are the 2 different starters one for a 3/8" drive gear and one that...
  7. Replacement starter install issue.

    Factory Five Roadsters
Mark... I have a huge 1/0 cable from the battery directly to the starter with the solenoid powered off the the fender mounted relay. I also have a #2ga ground wire from the battery to one starter mounting bolt and a #6ga from the frame to the second starter mounting bolt. This is all being...
  8. Replacement starter install issue.

    Factory Five Roadsters
Norm... I purchased two new starters for a 1993 Gt and neither one would engage and turn the flywheel. I don't think they were labeled as "high torque" if that makes a difference. Both were identical looking to the original starter with the same mounting bolt pattern and same throw on the...
  9. Replacement starter install issue.

    Factory Five Roadsters
Every measurement is exactly the same. I think I have s bad new starter. It is now engaging, but not spinning the flywheel. I think the noise I was hearing was actually from the gear reduction in the starter itself.
  10. Replacement starter install issue.

    Factory Five Roadsters
Both are exactly the same. Just bench tested both and the function the same also. Can't figure out why old one engages and the new one does not. Mounted in the same holes, and the gears are identical.
  11. Replacement starter install issue.

    Factory Five Roadsters
Well, I am in the process of installing my new starter and having an issue. I am sure I have the correct starter, but it will not engage the flywheel. They look 100% identical, same drive gear, same shaft throw distance. I hooked up the solenoid only to 12v and it does throw the gear in and out...

    Factory Five Roadsters

    Thanks guys!!!
  14. Best starter for a 408 with 10:1 compression?

    Factory Five Roadsters
Thanks Gordon. With the 157 tooth flywheel, I would need a starter for an automatic? Seems I've been reading that the automatic starter will work with both manual and auto with the 157. Correct?
  15. Best starter for a 408 with 10:1 compression?

    Factory Five Roadsters
Clunk and smoke from the old mini starter. Anybody have opinions on a new one? 157 tooth flywheel. Are the 164 and 157 starters the same??? Thanks!!-Mike
  16. I found my oil leak.... But how did it get here???

    Factory Five Roadsters
Update: I installed a PCV valve. Pass side pcv with 3/8" hose to fitech vacuum. Driver side cloased breather cap with 1/2" hose to bottom if air cleaner housing. The leak finding it's way to the top of the block is gone and the dipstick did not lift off the tube. I do still have a leak...
  17. I found my oil leak.... But how did it get here???

    Factory Five Roadsters
Sorry Craig... the breathers are 18 yrs old and original from the start of the build. Only 600 road miles, but lots of idling time over the years.
  18. I found my oil leak.... But how did it get here???

    Factory Five Roadsters
Thanks Frank. I do have both baffles in place. I did also notice that every time I take the car out, the top of the dipstick pops off the dipstick tube. Should I be worried enough to do compression and leak down tests??? Car runs great otherwise.
  19. I found my oil leak.... But how did it get here???

    Factory Five Roadsters
Frank... No PCV at all. Just breathers in both valve covers.
  20. I found my oil leak.... But how did it get here???

    Factory Five Roadsters
I am pretty sure it's probably from the breather. Working it's way out the breather, running towards the back of the valve cover and down to the block. I plan on taking a ride today along the same route as yesterday. I will take some paper towels and wrap the shaft of the oil breathers. This...
