This is the best way to fix the heat soaked ford factory starter issue.

Heat shields work better than insulation on the factory style starters if you must do something.

Brewha I was told by several old timers (not that I’m not one myself) that you should always run a separate ground from the starter bolt to the frame and not ground through the block. They told me the guys who did usually had a heat start issue with the starter. I’m not sure if you fall into this category.

Metal Heat Shield for Ford Starter?

Can't seem to locate a metal heat shield for a small block Ford starter. Plenty out there for Chevys.

Me Too

I've been having the same problem with my 302 (5.3k miles). Was considering buying a starter blanket, but think I'll try a metal heat shield instead. What j33jtp stated makes sense. If you do remove the blanket please let us know if it helped.

j33ptj the insulation works two ways,... Once the starter has heated up (eventually) the insulation prevents it cooling down quickly? I would remove the blanket from the starter, see if that helps. In normal cars you won't have a heat blanket around the starter either...

Starter Problems

I have an early 33 with a 90 5.0 V8. The starter has heat blanket around it, a metal heat shield and the manifold and exhaust pipe are wrapped with insulation. Its a new OEM starter and when the temperature is hot the starter will not restart the engine. It takes a bout 30 min with the hood up to cool and then start.
Has anyone else had this problem, and any solutions.
Thanks for your help
