Need help from FFR BrainTrust...sprinkler system

This problem has both our electrician and sprinkler company stumped...as well as me, but that's not saying much.

The sprinkler controller (designed for outdoor placement) is mounted on the side of our house, directly next to its*weatherproof GFCI outlet fed directly from an adjacent outdoor panel by a dedicated 15A breaker...1 foot run. The voltage at the outlet checks out at 117V.

The problem began when the controller spontaneously*failed a while back after several years of reliable operation. Removing and examining the box, the sprinkler guy showed me a burnt circuit board.*No lighting, surge, etc. that we are aware of and no other problems anywhere else in our 5800 sq ft house.*He mounted a replacement box, wired in the zones, plugged it in and...POP!...accompanied by ominous smoke. Same circuit board. Thinking it might be a second defective (albeit new in box), he got another off the truck and tried again...POP!*He said something must be wrong with he outlet and didn't want to blow another box until an electrician checked it out.

We then called our trusty electrician who found nothing wrong, but at our insistence replaced the breaker and GFCI outlet. The outdoor box was dry and tight. All connections firm. Voltage is a clean 177V.

Today, the sprinkler guy brought a new box, installed it, wired and double-checked the zones, plugged it into the adjacent GFCI and...POP!.

Nice guy that he is, he fetched a new box off his truck, wired and double-checked all the zone wiring and plugged it in via extension cord to an outlet on a different breaker in our crawlspace.

Works perfectly.

WTF could be wrong in an outlet that causes the only appliance plugged into it to blow?

BTW: The sprinkler company has serviced us for 25+ years and the electrician wired our house...not newcomers.

Is the hot and neutral reversed on the outlet? Perhaps the wire colors are correct at the outlet but reversed somewhere else in the circuit. The electrician probably checked it but perhaps he just looked at the black and white wires and thought it was correct.

117V or 177V?

- If the answer to the question is "the government" it was a stupid question to begin with.

177v??? If accurate, that’s your problem.
