OK, after Derald reminded me (thanks Derald), the "Fiero parking brake mod" was a GREAT! mod, cuz I used to get caught on the parking lot exit hill every time I left the Huntington Beach Cruise-In in the early days . . . this mod gave me a "hill-holder" that saved my ass many times, and more-than-likely, the guy behind me that was hugging my rear bumper.

Power Steering and Power Brakes

To me, adding the power steering and brakes made the car so much more street-able. Parking is a dream.

I made a lot of mods over the years. One of the best was a roll control. I used it all the time. Made it real easy to get started on a hill. Living in the mountains, that's kinda important. And it was fun for big smoky burn outs, too.

Another good one was replacing the front lower control arm bushings with rod ends. It did not increase harshness, noise, or vibration like I thought it would. But it allowed the suspension to work as planned, instead of transferring wheel movement to the rest of the chassis. A noticeably smoother ride with rod ends.

No, I actually cut off the bushings, and welded in rod ends. A slightly different way to get the same results. If that spherical bearing kit had been available, I would done that.



My race car suspension is based on a Miata. For that car, I pressed in spherical bearings everywhere. Made a huge improvement in handling.

Similar to the rear upgrade to rod ends i assume. Suspension will free up. Wonder if cost and effort is worth the improvement

Yes Mark sells both and they made a big improvement. The lighter spring and the rod ends eliminate the bind in the bushings and allow the suspension to really work. I set the shocks on full soft and then increase a couple of clics at a time until I'm happy with the ride and suspension control.

I have rod ends on the front LCAs similar to Bob's as well. The new inserts from FFR now make this mod much easier. Scott

Here are my favorite mods.

IRS - My car is set up for street driving and the streets where I live are bumpy.
Heated Seats - Year round driving.
Wife kit - Bag of blanket, gloves, scarf, beenie, etc (happy wife, more driving trips.)
Wooden steering wheel. - I use the thick leather wrapped steering wheel for autocrossing and the wooden for normal driving.

One more thing. The best thing to do with a Cobra is to drive it. I would not trade mod time for seat time.

If you don't have them they are a pretty inexpensive way to make driving more pleasurable. The difference is very noticeable.

I am watching this closely, I have an early MKII that is going to be repainted this winter and I want to make as many improvements as I can while it is apart for paint.

The spherical bearings are listed for the 2015 IRS. Are they needed for the older IRS, which is what I have? I think the old control arms already have rod ends.

Yes, if you installed the previous version of IRS, all the joints use rod ends.

Post build upgrades.

Drop trunk. After I got hooked on autocross and found that a helmet doesn't fit in the stock trunk.
Flowmaster Slimline mufflers. Big improvement, but my car is still too loud with my big cam.
Hydraulic clutch. During the build, I had no interest in a hydraulic clutch. After the older style offset quadrant ruined my Wilwood pedal box, I went hydraulic. Better feel (surprised at that). More linear. Better engagement point. The cable had the engagement fairly close to the floor even with some pre-load. Lighter, but still very firm, pedal. Talk about fun. Changing a pedal box on a completed car. Yeah, baby!

I built with the following and would do them all again.
Russ Thompson turn signal and gas pedal.
Wilwood brakes.
Cooltubes.
Power steering - good old fashioned hydraulic.
Heater and heated seats.

I built the car with a lot of the mods recommended on the forum. The only mod I've made since completion was to add power brakes. I already had power steering and after several attempts at improving the manual brake setup and, scaring the crap out of myself trying to slot back into traffic while passing on a back country road, I converted to power brakes. It's not easy on a completed car but it can be done. They greatly increased the pleasure and confidence I have while driving the car. As the old saying goes "it will stop on a dime and give you a couple of cents change".

Like others, there is more than one that improved the roadster.

The Hurst Competition Plus shifter, is a nice addition to have. Clean direct shifts. The leather boot for the shift lever helps as well, No push back, as from the rubber bellow type boot.

After many weekend trips, I have to agree. Even just a little bit bigger trunk would be great. I also travel with a full took kit. My next build will have a tool kit mount in the trunk.

I also have to go with the wings. I did not drive with this for month and then just "tried" them out once and never removed them.

Once more thing would be a tonneau cover. I use it every time I park outside of my garage. Not only to keep eyes out of the interior, but to keep the sun off of the seats. I also live with a car cover. I keep it in a compression sack in the trunk. You never know when you will get stuck in the rain. Plus, I just like to cover the car when I am at a hotel.

I am also surprised that no one has stated a 12v outlet for charging cell phones yet.

I use my car for daily cruise type stuff. As such, I've added some of the "today comforts" that I find I use very often.

1) Hidden USB's under the dash. I have my phone on the car charger all the time.

2) Magnets that hold the phone in place. I have hidden high power magnets behind the transmission cover and behind the dash. I also have a thin metal strip in between my phone and phone case. It keeps the phone in the same place as I drive.

3) Hidden cup holders. This is a 6" bar on the underside of the transmission cover, and a magnet glued to a yeti knock off tumbler. That's my coffee cup, or wide enough to take the lid off and hold a cup in it if desired. Then I pick it up, and it's gone from sight.

4) Trunk mod. CONSTANTLY using this extra space! Just having the "well" in the trunk to hold groceries or even a watermelon in place is very handy. When going on trips, it's my space used for the jack, jackstand and tools.

5) Turn Signal Module - blinkers that turn off automatically? yes please!

6) Side mirrors that fasten to the windshield post. I can see everything all around me without trouble.

Some very good ideas in here. I think the more enjoyable you can make the car the more likely you are to drive it.

For me the addition of PS and PB was life changing. That alone made me want to drive it more.

Quite the pipes is something I think I’ll do next.
