Cherry Bomb Muffler Under Car

Cherry Bomb Turbo Mufflers #16808CB seem like they will fit under the MK4 seat pan with 3/4 inch space for airflow. They are 3.25 inches high. Online sound clips seem a lot quieter than side pipes. Anybody ever try one under a Cobra with 2.25 inch pipe?

Consider using Spintech mufflers. The offer a number of low profile mufflers with options on sound level. They make mufflers for use with with round and oval exhaust pipe. The oval pipe, although expensive, could help with ground clearance in critical areas.

Thanks Alan, I have thought about Spin Techs and they are a real possibility. I was about to order them when I saw the Cherry Bombs and for the difference in price, maybe I should try the Cherry Bombs. I know you "get what you pay for", but unless you ask you never know.

There are a couple guys with under car systems. I would definitely find out what they did. Cheap mufflers tend to be HP killers if you care about that.

It really depends how anal you are about keeping things above the lowest point on the frame. I used a 3” thick spintech on each side, and yes the case is 3”, but there are seams that add another 1/8+ to the overall thickness of the muffler. Keep that in mind with these Cherry Bombs.

Round 2 1/4 pipes do not leave much room under the footboxes for an air gap without dipping a little below the frame (or very close to it), I used oval 2.5” pipe and even that was cutting it close.

I tried my best to keep everything as tight as possible, and my “calculations” had my muffler sitting about an 1/8” above bottom of the frame and 3/4” off the floor pan.... but with welding and holding stuff in place and making mounts etc., those small tolerances get eaten up pretty quickly - I ended up with the muffler a butt-hair higher than the frame.

I’ve got a thread on it floating around somewhere, plenty of pics to show just how tight things get.

Actually, two mufflers for undercar exhaust. Tired of side pipes blasting in my ear plus I like the look better.

I used SpinTech cruiser series mufflers. They are 2 1/4 inches thick and match the 2 1/4 inch pipe I used.

jolsen42 is being a little humble here, but his under car exhaust is illustrated in the FAQ section:

John O's car is not an original Cobra. It is indeed a Factory Five. He re-bodied the car in his quest for authenticity. Currently, it has been re-bodied again, this time with a slabside body by Mr Bruce. Beautiful!

Engine Masters just did a $40 muffler shootout on their latest episode. The did several of each; pass-through, chambered , and turbo. There was a Cherry Bomb in each group. Of course, pass through had the most HP and was loudest. The worst was about 20 HP less than the best on a 600hp engine.

My dad’s mk 3.1 has under car exhaust with cherry bombs.
It sounds good, but my car with side pipes sounds a lot better.

He has factory headers and the j pipes,
I’m sure the headers are the biggest restriction. With a good set of headers it would have a lot less exhaust than a stock mustang.

I built my undercar exhaust using Spintech mufflers and some ovalized as well as round tubing.

I'll admit I'm biased but I really like the look and sound.

I like what you did with the Spintechs, but a little surprised you did not route the exhaust all the way to the back. What you did sort of looks like an under the car side exhaust? Last week I ordered the Spintech side exhaust kit for 65-85 Mustangs together with their universal x-pipe kit. I don't expect to see it for a couple of week yet, but I am looking forward to fitting it to my 1970 Mach 1 restomod.

This is the same layout as my dad’s car but he used cherry bomb glass packs
