Rear License plate Mounting??

Just attempted to mount the rear plate on my MK4 and lo and behold the vertical space between the bottom of the plate light and the top of trunk latch handle is about an inch too close for the plate to fit??? I don't see an easy solution using these parts. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Bill

Here we go again! Search bar is your friend! Jeff Kleiner has the best fix! The trunk was splashed from an original... the tags in England were narrow and longer than ours.

WBILB thanked this.

I did the Kleiner license-plate-light mod (with added LED's), and built up the little pad on the trunk lid. Between raising the light fixture on the pad, and raising the plate into the light fixture, I didn't have to cut the plate at all.

See post #22 of my graduation thread. https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/show...d-Circumstance

I think Jeff's mod is here. https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/show...nd-Plate-Mount

Some people cut the plate. Either at the top into the fixture, or at the bottom around the handle.
WBILB thanked this.

Not correct. There was enough room on the original trunk mount for a US plate. No modification to the mount or plate was required.

Bob, BOAT373 pointed me in the right direction to Jeff Kleiner's excellent modification...... Just FYI the MK1-3 cars will accommodate a standard 12x6 plate, however the MK4 lids were made a little more closely to originals and will NOT accommodate a standard US plate.

When I said original, I meant the real original Shelby/AC-built cars - which would fit a normal US plate.

Steal Some Space from Two Places

Round out a clearance at the bottom-middle of the plate, and make a slot in the bottom of the plastic light bulb cover. Works fine.

Or notch both the top and bottom of the tag. Yeah, I know it may be illegal technically, but I've been driving w/o a front tag for 14 yrs and that is technically illegal too.

Cool

Yes, you should already know... I'm in Left Field.

Screw that junk. Get a "used" Ford trunk release and scrap the handle. I used the Ford trunk latch and a two channel remote and no Problem! (The manual trunk release will fit in the FFR trunk latch hole that ends up behind the tag. If something happens, dead battery, trunk release button takes a dump or lost remote, just remove the license plate and turn the release with a screwdriver.)

To complicate the "key" thingie more, I don't have any period. I'm using an RF ID start system and a button.

This is one of those "little" problems that FFR has just let go.

If you look at the back end of an original cobra such as Dick Smiths 198 the light seems to be mounted higher giving more than enough room for the plate. It almost looks like the rear face of the trunk lid is taller??

Same mod as MCathcart, it's a little more effort but well worth it. Now I can pop the trunk open with a push of the under dash trunk release button or the alarm's remote trunk release button. I also used the manual trunk release as the emergency release, just remove the license plate and turn with a screwdriver. Definitely like the cleaner no handle look of the trunk too.

I cut my plate, and I'll do it again. Police and RMV don't seem to care, and it's the lowest effort of any solution I've seen. I just used a drill, a hacksaw, and a file.

Notched mine at the top, wanted the year to show. No NCDMV or LEO issues.
