Chrome Plating Aluminum

Expensive Lesson.... I recently had my Windshield Frame and Grill Chrome Plated for $1,300.00. When the car was in the Body Shop for prep work, they installed Nutplates to fit the removable Hard Top and Side Post. Where they drilled the holes, the Chrome Plating immediately started pealing in sheets. The Chrome Shop said that you should never drill into the Chrome Plating, as it will always peal. I do not know this for a fact, or if it was not prepped properly. Finger Pointing is not solving my problem. Has anyone had the same issue with plating Aluminum Parts?? Do not want to go through this again.

Yes, I had to drill a hole in a chromed part for my motorbike, same problem...

Chrome flakes easily of AL is my impression.
Rotorhead thanked this.

Yes, sadly I have experienced similar problems with chrome.

I am so sorry that you are dealing with this. I hate, HATE, when things like this come up! It is such an expensive mistake that is out of proportion to the modest error that produced it!

I hope you are able to make it work, and that the financial pain subsides. I am truly sorry; good luck!

Chroming aluminium

Very sorry about your windshield frame.

I had the upper aluminum radiator pipe I built chromed and just the expansion and contraction of the pipe is causing the chrome to peel.
