Shock Question

Has anyone been successful in improving their Hot Rod ride quality? On smooth pavement my car is great but bumpy roads are to be feared.

The car rides like an old truck on bumpy roads and will jar your teeth loose. I have 250# springs in the rear and 400# up front.

I suspect that I have too much spring up front as FFR supplies the same non-adjustable shock/spring combo regardless of you engine weight.

I imagine that my 302 weighs a lot less than a coyote or an LS.

I don't have the knowledge or experience to engineer the solution so I am hoping someone here has already solved this problem.

You're Windsor weighs 460 lbs about. Maybe less if aluminum heads and all. A coyote weighs 444 lbs. Aluminum LS motors are also fairly light. So we all actually have the same problem.

Many folks have gone to lighter springs but remember that sway in corners may be affected. I plan on lightening mine up for final assembly. I think if you search here or the suspension area on other site you may find the information you're looking for is already there.

The problem is actually the shocks - they have far too much compression damping for a car of this weight. There is alot of discussion on both forums covering the various solutions. It sounds like your spring rates are fairly close but the real solution is going to be different dampers

Check with Dr. Ruth. He sells a QA1 package for the ‘33.

The QA1's were ultimately my best solution after trying a lot of different things.

I set the QA1 shocks about 4 clicks up from full soft for street use here in WI. On the race track I turn them about 5 more clicks toward the stiffer end as the car gets a bit "floaty" above 100 MPH with the soft settings. There are 18 positions in the adjuster, I believe.

Thanks to all for your responses. I agree that the shocks are the problem as they can not be adjusted.

Sounds like DR. Ruth has the answer. Is that where you got your shocks Tom? Also Tom, did you replace all 4 shocks or just the front? If you replaced the rear shocks what settings did you use?

Look into progressive springs. Tuned right they will give you a less bumpy ride but also be stiffer when needed.
