Get it registered as a "Special Contruction Vehicle". This will allow you to apply for an SB100 smog exemption based on the model year that the car replicates, being 1965. The only equipment required will be a Type IV closed PCV system if you run a carb.

I bought mine from out of state where it was registered as a 65 Ford roadster, took it to my insurance company "AAA" and let them handle the rest. No problems in the last 10 years, no SB100

Ian is correct.

If registered legally, according to Oregon laws, then California will allow you to transfer that registration. No need to get an sb100 exemption.

If, however, your car was not 100% legally registered in your home state, then California will not honor the transfer and will impound and charge substantial fees when caught.

You be the judge. It's all about fees. 1965 cars don't generate the big renewal fees that newer cars do. California prefers to register the year of the car as the year it was first registered. Then you would need to get an exemption.

Thanks Gentlemen,

My car has been registered in Oregon for over 15 years as a 1965 replica so I don't foresee any problems.

I plan to relocate in the Escondido, San Marco area, outside the city limits.

Is there a local Cobra club or a group that goes out for drives together?

That just up the road from me. There are a few groups that get together. Here in the SoCal section you'll them from time to time and there is also a group called Mission Valley Cobra's and Corvette's that go for a run on the first saturday of the month. They meet down near Qualcomm stadium.

When are you moving down?

Google "Cruisin' Grand" for the best weekly car show in San Diego County. Runs April through September every Friday night from 5-9 PM. Hundreds of cars show up each week and a different marque is highlighted every week

i would never consider moving from oregon to so cal. Sucks here. Its over populated, expensive, traffic is a COMPLETE nightmare and you will need to learn spanish to shop at the grocery store or eat at mcdonalds.

But, i guess the weather is good? LOL.

Come on up!

I work out of my home so traffic is of no issue. I plan to buy property outside of the city since I am a country boy. Already understand enough Spanish to get by. I like the energy & attitudes of the So. Ca. residents. The weather of course.

Expensive yes, boring no.

Ore. is probably the most boring state in the union. Fat, ugly women with attitudes (like they were French models), 8 months of terrible weather, liberal attitudes (take care of me as I can't do it myself). Oregon ranks #3 is food stamp usage. Our inner city highways are crowded because the liberals think everyone should take buses & trains. (18% actually due but they spend $$ to build more lines anyway).

Anti-depressant use is one of the highest in the nation. We have one of the largest book stores in the nation, but only a population of 500K. What's that tell you. We have more restaurants & strip clubs per population then any midsized city.

If you like to dream about driving your car for 8 months out of the year, fish, hunt, hike in the rain, camp in the rain, have to take Vit D supplements because of the lack of sunshine, COME ON UP!

In fact, lets trade. I have a nice 2000 sq ft. ranch with a 24x24 shop (heated by wood stove, power, cement floor, insulated that perfect for tinkering, plus 2 acres with a partial view of the Cascades, 7 min. from anything you would ever want to buy without having to go into Portland.

Just as long as your house is in the Escondido/San Marcos area

LOL, i guess the grass is always greener on the other side!!!

Dont think you are going to get away from the liberals down here. They are everywhere! Dont even bother voting if you are republican, because you wont win. NO ARNOLD was NOT a REPUBLICAN as proof by his wife...

Lastly, i would love to trade, problem being i have a 600k home that is now worth 290 and have to put away $700 a month for property taxes... Oh and i live in south corona.

Anyway, it will be awesome to have another member so close!!! good luck with the move!

But James, I thought you hated hot weather. LOL We love the different seasons up here. I enjoy San Diego too, but its always boring 80 degrees down there. Whether it's nine in the morning or nine at night.
Oh, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someday we will have a Republican to run this state. Gregg

90º+ weather yes, but it's 70-80º consistently in so. cal. That I like.
I have been in oregon over 60 years - I've seen every tree that grows here, every hill. etc. want to look at a different landscape for the next 60!

Plus my middle daughter just had her first child & it would be fun to watch my 3rd grand child grow up.

I am also a hot rod fan & would like to be closer to the culture & that's so. cal. for sure.

FYI, the followiong was posted on "another" Cobra forum:

In case you missed it, Assembly Bill 2461 (Emmerson) was passed. It was designed to clean up last years bill. In short it does the following:

1. Delay this bill's operative dates so that the amnesty program would be in effect from July 1, 2011 until June 30, 2012.

So amnesty is extended until June 30, 2012

2. Require a vehicle in the amnesty program to be certified as having met smog requirements.

The statute specifically states:

For purposes of this section, a certificate of compliance
shall be issued to a specially constructed vehicle that has applied
for amnesty if the vehicle has met the inspection and maintenance
tailpipe emissions requirements, as determined by the Bureau of
Automotive Repair, for the model year assigned under paragraph (2) of
subdivision (c). A specially constructed vehicle that has applied
for amnesty shall not be subject to the requirements of a visual
inspection.

My limited review suggest that you still need a SB 100 exemption or pass emissions based on the year of the amnesty application. Same rules as it has been except for #3

3. Exempt these vehicles from the visual inspection element of smog test requirements.

No visual inspection required.

Further information can be found www.sen.ca.gov by searching for AB2461

For those California residents that have improperly registered kit cars I strongly encourage you to take advange of this program.

For those others that are looking to buy a kit car in California, a reminder that a kit car or replica car can never possess registration reflecting the date that the vehicle replicates (AKA 1965). The vehicle was not in existence in 1965. These cars are to be registered as specially constructed vehicles and the year of the vehicle should reflect the year of the build. In California any registration that states otherwise should be fraudulent.

speaking of guns, I have a 40 state concealed lic. for handguns, i know it's a pain to get one in Cali, what about ownership of guns when moving to the state?

I know it's not cobra related but i am sorting out all aspects of my move south.

thanks guys.

You should be fine as long as...

They are not illegal guns.. IE short shot guns, full auto, fun.

Dont bring any High cap magazines. We are only allowed to shoot 10 rounds at a time.

check out calguns.net

10years ago, it was empty down here by toms. But it has really grown. One of the reasons we moved here was because of the low population in the area. Its still been a real good place to live, but i dont know if i can say that 10 years from now.

OH, concealed carry depends on who the sherrif is in your area... AND its only good by county. Riverside county is somewhat easy to get one because its a rightwinger county but when you start moving to the left you lose some freedoms.

good luck!

I'm not sure which part is ruining your dream. The relevant piece of that message, in my mind, is that NO replica can be registered in CA as a 1965! It must be registered as an SPCN 20XX. That should not be a dream killer as that is how most of our cars are registered.

Keep the dream alive!

Bob -
Thanks for the encouragement. I am still in the planning stages. Got laid off in December, so my total focus is getting a new job and dreaming about my build....

Meanwhile - I am looking at engine configurations. My insurance guy says rates are determined by engine size. (Interestingly, not HP). I was thinking 302 with EFI for practical street / frwy commuting and regular pump gas, so this seems to be what I want. I figure a nice crate engine would just bolt in. Later, I could add a supercharger...
