I'd prefer not to have to install a PCV valve, but If I have to I will. Were you able to register without it under SB100? I would think that it may vary depending on where the inspection is done, since the inspectors can have different opinions.

John: When I got my SB100 number, DMV didn't care what I had. All they wanted was the MSO, some receipts (never give them ALL yours), and lots of money. I had my receipts with me, but I only showed them the one for the kit, the tires and wheels, and my engine. The more you show them, the more graft, er tax they suck out of you. When I had my car inspected, I had no windshield wipers, no smog junk, etc. Some places differ, so good luck. Contact Ray on the forum if you want to know more. Or, ask me more questions if you need to. One more thing. I registered my MKIII as a 1965 Cobra replica, and not by the engine year. That is, or was, your choice when getting it inspected at BAR. That way I didn't have to have any smog junk on it. I am not sure if you can still get away with that, or not. HTH, Larry

Like was stated above, you need the pcv valve and if your other valve cover has a breather it must be vented to the air cleaner with the CORRECT smog emissions type hose. Put the damn things on there, get it inspected, then toss them in the trash. Don't give the BAR any reason to question your build. Smile, agree with them, get your sticker and get out.

I agree, but I really don't want to drill a hole in my carbon airbox for a breather line if I don't have to - especially if I don't need it later on. I guess I'll see what happens.

John, If you are having the inspection done here at the Fresno BAR station, you WILL have to have a PVC valve. I have registered both a roadster and coupe and the ref wanted a PVC valve and the proper (fuel) hose. Neither car had a hose from the otjher breather to the air cleaner, but I have read here that other stations are now requiring one.

Just did mine this week in San Jose at Evergreen college BAR; they did check for pcv from one valve cover to base of carburator and vent hose from other valve cover to base of air cleaner. Looked for "fuel rated hose". That was all they checked.
I registered mine as a 1965 Roadster Body style; since the Levy STage 4 had no serial number on the engine block I got (which they asked for to look it up in a book to see what year the engine block was) I told them it was a seasoned 302 block also from a 1965, so that's what they wrote down. Figured it couldn't hurt to have both 1965.
Took about 15 minutes to complete, went really smooth.

Did they ask for a serial number or a block casting number? I guess they didn't know that Ford 302's did not come out until 1968. It shouldn't have mattered anyway.

Steve
Serial Number; they were looking on the flat surface just behind the intake manifold. I didn't know it was 1968 either...DOP!

New rules at the BAR. PCV valve and a breather that vents to the air cleaner using the properly designated hose are both required (no matter what year the engine was manufactured) for some reason.
Don't buck it! Just get an old air cleaner and plumb a breather hose to the base. After youpass inspection, put the original parts back on and enjoy.

Will it also work if you have it vented to the base of the carb or does it have to go into the air cleaner? Seems they both go the same spot which is back into the engine. My Holley Street avenger has PCV's on both sides of the base.
The Ford Racing air cleaner has a hole and fitting for this purpose. Got the breather with the nozzle and hooked it in. Had a PCV valve installed and going back to the Carb. BAR had no problems with this setup.
Just "borrow" a set from someone temporarily. If I wasn't so far away, I'd just drop off the pieces to you so you can get past BAR inspection; my engine is on a dolly waiting for a clutch that won't arrive until next week.

The vacuum port on the other side is for Vacuum Brake booster set up if you have it. The reason one hose goes inside the air cleaner box is to "draw clean air" into the crankcase to purge the build up blow by gases through the PCV valve to the carburator base, which is relatively high vacuum. I suppose it would work without the vent as blowby gases allow flow to the carburator base, but you would not get the volume of air moving through as you would with the vent to the air cleaner. Blowby gases would then contaminate the oil more.
