I saw that. Could you tell where he was faster? The diff between your avg. speed and his was less than 1 mph. All you have to do to make that up is increase your corner entry and steady state cornering by a c-hair. That small increase in exit speed will yield higher top speed earlier.

I know the hardest thing for me to work on is corner entry speed. Overslowing the car during braking is a hard habit to break as that's the hairiest part of the whole thing. It's not necessarily about braking later, it's about braking less; carrying your straightaway speed deep into the corner. Easier said than done when you're surrounded by wet grass and tire barriers.

If you autocross, that's a good place to practice. Forget about lap times. Just pick a couple of corners practice threshold trail-braking. Get used to feeling out the slip angles so they're maximized, rotating into the corner with a little less traction and a little more speed.

BTW, I'll be at Summit Point for the Nov. event. Hope to see you there. I'm renting a spec Miata for HPDE3.

we had almost the same distance the whole time. He just does everything about a mile per hour faster. I have the weight advantage, so "I should" begin braking later than him. He has race ABS, most of the time computers are better than my modulated foot pressure.

I don't think I will be running in November. I did run a 1:18.7 in an august SCCA track day.

Do you run a data logger? If so, what type? It would be fun to run through it.

I wonder if bringing in Peter Krause would get you that 1 second.

You can't brake later if you're only 5 - 6 car lengths behind him or in traffic of any sort, unless you're passing them in the braking zone, in which case your line is screwed.

Edit: BTW, late braking is worth a few hundredths of a second at most. Higher entry, cornering and exit speed are worth one, maybe two tenths in the sectors in which they occur and maybe several tenths at the end of the ensuing straight. One tenth faster in ten corners is your one second.

Maybe you know all this. Just saying...focus where the impact is greatest.

Yeah, data logging would really help here.

Edit 2: And yeah, I'm an arm chair racing expert! You know what they say about "Those that can" and "Those that can't".

I have the racepak. It continually has problems. I actually bought a new unit 4 months ago. When I ran at Summit in Aug. it showed nothing. I recorder 4 sessions. Then when I went to check the data for VIR, and the summit data showed up. I'm giving up, I think I am just going to buy a whole different system. I have video too. It would be nice to put them together as JG does.

Updated!

I'm not familiar with NJMP so I didn't know if Pat's time on Thunderbolt is beaten by John's time on Thunderbolt (short). Are they the same?

Updated. Sorry, Pat. You've been overthrown!

That looks like a fun track. I hope I get to drive there some time.

This was an 105db day. One of the few that come up every year. The event was with SpeedVentures and we had another one with our NorCal Shelby club in November. So, I did nothing. However, my system (30" Lobak) purr's a 96db so no issues when it's unlimited or even a 105db day. I do have another set of factory exhaust with CC inserts and a removable tip to be able to add if needed, that blows a 89db. I plan on testing them this year when we go back.

I Keep thinking I will see a 1:59X.

BTW, how far are you from ST2? That time would have been very close to the national winner's time.

Hey, guys! Thanks for keeping this thread alive and congrats to all of you on your continued progress. I have updated the main post with links to each or your individual posts. Sorry it took so long.

I have to say I'm really surprised that an 818 hasn't set any record times yet. I was sure that configuration was going be the one that would shatter all the records.
