I've read post after post about how good POR-15 paint is,,,, but why??? I purchased and used some and can't believe how piss poor it has turned out.. Air bubbles everywhere.. Now that I've done a search of the archives I see that I'm not the only one that has experienced the air bubbles! Time to do some sanding and use some decent paint now. Those of you that recommend POR paint should also warn about the possibility of air bubbles showing up in the final finish. What a waste of time and money.. GRRR....
The paint was stirred, not shaken. The metal surfaces were completely cleaned of all grease and lubricants.. Hours were spent working on this, using a variety of cleaners and solvents. I then lightly sanded the rusted areas to remove any loose or flaking rust, but intentionally didn't sand down to bare metal. I then went over the entire rearend again with soap and solvent to remove anything remaining. I then pained it.. Even the paint that ran down the side of the can has air bubbles in it...
I then did a search and find that lots of people have had exactly the same trouble and eventually gave up and painted with spray paint. One of the few FFR Cobra builds I've seen in person used POR paint and now thinking back I remember that one having air bubbles in the paint too. I just dismissed it at the time figuring that he didn't clean it good enough prior to painting..
I talked a POR rep at a car show a few months ago and he specifically told me that cleaning with solvents is not recommended and he states it is printed in the instructions, though I couldn't find it.
You're supposed to use their cleaner only and then just paint over that once it dries sufficiently according to the directions on the can and on their site.

Used it on a lot of parts on my build. No problems. Black, MetalMask, Silver.

I decided against re-sanding everything and starting over. I just put a second coat over the first and however it turns out, is how it turns out. It sure didn't work for me the way I wanted. Glad it's only on the rear axle!
My calipers turned out pretty good, but I didn't use POR!

For whatever its worth, I did a LOT of POR on my '68 911. The entire underbelly, most of the interior metal, and most of the trunk. No bubbling at all.
I didn't use any solvent or cleaner of any kind. The worst part of the car was the underbelly. I spent days heating and scraping off the undercoating, and in many cases grinding it off. Hit the bare metal with the Metal Ready or whatever they called it, and put two coats of POR on it. No bubbling, no chipping, no flaking.
IMO, its worth getting right. A friend of mine has an old landrover frame sitting behind his barn which he PORed years ago. Still as good as the day he did it.
I'm tempted to do it on the frame when I finally get the kit, but I think there is still POR in my hair from when I was doing the 911 three years ago.
I did most of the donor parts and the entire frame. The donor parts all got the base coat and the finish coat. They came out great. I did clean them with turpentine but then I think I also cleaned them with heptane or acetone and then with the por-15 cleaner. The frame I painted over the FFR black paint job with just the por-15 top coat. It came out "ok" but not as well as the donor parts that had gotten the full treatement. But, I did not get any bubbles. I used a spray gun.
