x3 for the Go Pro HD Hero 2. Got one for Christmas this year. Just working it out. There are some other nice POV (Point of View) cameras out there, and each has their enthusiastic supporters. But the Go Pro products are the most widely used, and for good reason. Search for Go Pro videos on YouTube. Tons of examples out there. Many people who have way cooler lives than me.
Two additional thoughts: If you have the standard FFR 2 inch roll bar, the Go Pro roll bar mount isn't that great. It's just too small and a little flimsy. I ordered the Eyeofmine roll bar mount. Huge upgrade.
Also, I was pretty disappointed with the audio using the internal mic when on the roll bar due to wind noise. I went to an external mic just laying down inside the cockpit, and the results are way better. The newer HD Hero 2 has an external mic jack, another reason to use the newest model.
I picked up a couple GoPro HD Heros (Not Hero 2) on e-bay for significantly less than MSRP. Good way to save some $ if you don't mind having "last year's model".
A real world difference, I mentioned already in my post, is the external mic jack for the new Hero 2. At least for a roll bar mount, that's out in high wind, the internal mic is pretty disappointing. I guess it's possible to mod the standard Hero (have seen mentioned on the web) but probably not necessary to go there now that the new model is out.
The daily deal on Woot! today is a GoPro knock-off for $140. Never heard of it, but it comes standard with an LCD screen and remote - could be pretty good: Woot® : One Day, One Deal
I got a Gopro Hero 2 for Christmas and took a few videos before the spring rains hit. The picture quality is excellent but as Edwardb says, the audio isn't great. I just purchased a roll bar mount and am itching for sunshine so I can try it out.
If you want to see a video I made a couple of weeks ago, pm me your email address and I can add you to my shutterfly sight.
Cheers
Bill
OK, here you go. Two videos. Same car (mine, obviously), same relatively new GoPro HD Hero2 camera, same roll bar mount, and similar circuit around my general home area. A week or two apart.
First is with the internal GoPro mic. Note this is with the vented rear door. The video is pretty short because it's all basically the same wind noise once up to speed. Note - not sure what was rattling during this video. I think something on the pass seat against the harness. Normally car does make a rattle or squeak...
Second is a video I posted here a couple of weeks ago. This time with an external mic. It's an Audio-Technica PRO24CM Stereo Microphone, recommended on several forums for the GoPro. The sound level is slightly lower, so you may need to turn up the volume a little. A problem cited by several others, but still acceptable. The mic was just laying on the transmission tunnel. I've since made a base with holder, and should sound a little better. But I like it.
