Question for you IPOD to AMP set-up users

Guys, see following thread after having read below::

http://www.ffcars.com/forums/showthr...=1#post2232019

I have some issues and was wondering what AMPs you are using with your IPod Y-Cable set up and if you have experienced similar issues.

Thanks, Chris

I recently installed an IPOD/AMP setup in my MKII roadster. But I can only provide limited insight, as my car isn't on the road yet...

I went with an Alpine pdx-5 amp (4x75w, 1x300w). I am using polk audio component speakers (5.25" front and 6.5" rears). I also installed a subwoofer in the trunk (JL Audio 10" low profile box). I purchased a custom (length) y-cable from bluejeanscables.com.

I still have to make some adjustments, but I am so far very happy with the way it sounds.

Sound is great

CobraRad, thanks for the detail on what model AMP you are using.
I agree on the sound. I always had very good sound, just now it seems something is not working anymore as the AMP changes to PROTECT mode and shuts down sound. I think it happens when I increase the volume to 3/4 or more on the IPod. Never happened the past 6 months and just started. Y-Cable is ok as I tested another one and saw the same issue.

All others, what AMP are you using and has anyone seen similar issues after use?

Thanks, Chris

I used to really be into stereo's but have limited knowledge now so my advice is worth every penny it costs you I have my ipod setup directly to amp. Amp is a pioneer 175x2 RMS. FYI I wouldnt go out any buy a pioneer but I won a sales contest and they only carried pioneer. May sound like overkill in terms of power but here is my logic. When using an Ipod/Mp3 device connected to a head unit you set the volume on the ipod at 50% volume and then adjust volume with head unit. THis is to prevent the "spike" that is mentioned in other thread. Well, since we arent using a head unit not much option here. SO I got an amp that delievers more power than I need and I turned the output down way low. THought going this route may make it less sensitive. So far so good. I would try a more powerful amp and turn the output down.

HTH

It is most likely the input voltage from the ipod. Your Amp might not have a high enough input sensitivity being as old as it is. Most new amps are able to receive an input voltage as high as 8 volts. But some older amps could not take more than 2 volts. It would work for a while and then burn up the amp as it was being overdriven. You can check the voltage from the ipod at 3/4+ volume. If it is above 2 volts (and I believe it is.) you have your problem figured out.

Super

Great input guys.

I was wondering if the AMP is too sensitive to the input.
Guess I might be checking for one online with special attention to the input sensitivity.

Thanks, Chris
