Question Tire Repair Question

I think I know the answer to my question, but I'll ask it anyway.

I bought a set of Nitto NT-05 (255-40-17 front, 275-40-17 rear). I have about 300 miles on them so far (including track time at Watkins Glen). So far I'm happy with the grip, but I'm not so sure about tread life, but that remains to be seen. I plan to be primarily street the car with very occasional track use.

As I got home last night, the roadster didn't look right and I found that I have a screw through the rear passenger side tread.

My question is: should I have the tire repaired or should I replace it?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Paul

Exactly what do you mean by side tread? The obvious and safest answer is to replace but I am not 100% sure that is what I would do. Can you post a photo?

Sidewall, replace.

Tread, plug or patch.

I meant to say rear passenger side tire. The screw is in the tread, not the side-wall. Attached is a pic of the screw.

I was wondering if this could be repaired (i.e., plugged) or should I suck it up and just replace the tire.

Thanks again,

Paul

Plug it. I bought one of these kits a few years back and have saved way more than it cost me on tire repair. I keep it and a 12v compressor in the trunk of the FFR. Used it once on my FFR, once on the wife's car, twice on the lawn tractor and have helped out a couple of other people. I do 10-20 tire repairs a day. The safest is to have it taken off the rim and patched. If the hole is 1/4 in have them use a plug patch. A plug usually will leak over time again but a patch will last the life of the tire. I do believe in keeping a plug kit in the car but for emergency and temporary repair only. I see no need to replace the tire unless when it comes off the rim and rubber dust is found, this is from driving on a low tire. It does not take to long for this damage to start. It sounds as though you caught this early.

Thanks guys.

I think I'll have it patched for now but will definitely get a plug kit and 12V compressor for road emergencies.

Thanks again,

Paul

Great. I have used plugs when needed but a patch is the "right" fix. Patch it and forget it.

Update:I had the tire patched, no internal tire dust. I put it through its paces over the weekend and it held pressure, no problem. Good as new. Thanks to all for the advice!Paul

See tires will contribute to get better mileage, typically you can replace your tires after 25000 to 30000 miles, but if you feel that that are not working properly then replace the same
