NJ Questions

Hi,

So i've been building this cobra for a while now, and I am now trying to get my paperwork into Trenton(again) so I can go to Morristown(again). The first time I went the packet and required paperwork were a little different then now. I have a few questions, so I'll try to keep it short.

1. Do you need a NJ Drivers License #? I currently have a Colorado License from living out there for the past few years. I can have my dad register it in his name if needed.

2. What sort of paperwork is required to verify an engine year? I just installed a 1969 302, 69 block/heads/manifold all with casting numbers. Is that enough for Morristown to verify the year.

3. Construction details; what all did you guys write up for that?(didn't have to do that in 2004...)

Thanks
Kurt

I don't know about the drivers licence, I live in New jersey. I don't think it should matter.

When you bring the car for inspection they will check the engine to see what year the block is. They checked mine and gave me a letter stating that it has a 65' engine I need to bring that whenever I need to get the emissions inspection.

As far as construction details, I just said I built it according to the build manual and tell them you can provide it if they want to see it. Make sure you have as many reciets as can to prove you bought the parts and paid tax on them. Its a pia but you'll get it

Kurt,

1: If it's going in your name, then yes, a NJ license is required for the paperwork portion.

2: When your bring your car for it's initial specialty inspection (at the old Morristown inspection station just off RT287) they will visually verify the casting on the block.

3: You should have copies of all your build receipts, sorted and in detail. These guys do this day in and day out and hate when people bring them an unsorted box of paperwork. They love it when a builder brings in a 3 ring binder with everything in order.

4: Not that you asked, but you are required to have at least one wiper, sidepipe covers, and nothing routed or potentially dragging below your frame rails (IE: you need 17" rims/tires on the car to pass).

Cool, thanks for the answers.

Yes I found out in 2004 that I would need functioning wipers and shielding on the side pipes, both have been addressed.

I was not aware of the frame rail issue...I have 15" rims currently. The only thing that hangs below my frame rails is the flange on the bellhousing.

I have access to a nice pair of 17" chrome cobra r's that I could probably use if necessary.

How many receipts did you provide?? I wasn't aware that I needed to bring copies of them to morristown, I have probably hundreds of receipts but was trying to only use the big ones to verify I bought a motor, or donor car etc. without having to tally up like 30k in receipts and pay a lot more sales tax...

Organize and bring any and all paperwork, expect to get hit for the full tax amount (these guys are not stupid in any way shape or form).......Use the 17" rims for the inspection............Trim bellhousing as needed...

vin

What did you guys do for a vin #??

When I went in 2004 they said I needed a visible VIN number on the car. I got the chassis tag from factory five, but have not mounted or stamped a vin in it yet.

If you used their chassis tag, where did you mount it? and did you put a vin number on or let the dmv assign one??

Hit and miss on this one, I usually stamp in whatever the MSO reads (IE: FRRXXXX, or FFRXXXXXXXXXXX). Mounting it is the tricky part, as some will allow it on the firewall, some want to see it on the main tube, drivers side, just under the dash where it can be easily read and accessed.

Papework is in!

Thanks for all the answers. I mailed everything into Trenton on Friday. Now I just have to patiently wait for the DMV to call and schedule my inspection appointment.

Who knows I may just get to drive this before winter shows up.
