Ryan,

OOOooo Shinny. Looks good! That POR 15 is tough stuff but expensive. I bought a quart of it to paint some small pieces. It took me 20 minutes to get the top off. They got a little of it on the rim before they closed the can.

Same here

It took me a long time to get the lid off, I bought a gallon to split with someone but he back out, I tried to keep the half gallon I had left sealed up, I used a piece of plastic then hammered the lid back on and put it in the fridge. With as much as i have left i am going to do the doors of my buddy's 56 Ranch Wagon and the complete underside of the Comet, lol.
I will post pics when i am done with the belly, Ryan

update, no pics

Well I had so much of the million dollar POR 15 left over, I did the complete underside of the wagon with POR 15, everything is out, trans, drive shaft, gas tank, brake lines etc so I did it all. I dawned one of my HAZMAT tyvek suits and fired on the rubber gloves and got started. There really wasnt alot of rust on the underside I was just tryin to seal her up with some extra product.

Its gonna be a shiny durable underside for "Kathy". I didnt have my camera but I will take pics next time I am at the car.

I also installed the intake manifold (now painted black), the rest of the motor will be put back together soon as well. then..........

Next up will be to take the third member (2.80 ) from the mustang and install it in the Comet 8 inch, after I restore the housing in the Comet, then brakes ans so on and so on. Pics soon. Oh yeah i still had extra left and we did the floor of my buddys 56 wagon with the remaining POR 15. Have a good weekend

Ryan,

I’m glad you are making progress. That por 15 covers a lot of ground. I’d love to see pictures. I live vicariously thru your progress. As for my Comet nothing is getting done. I broke my hand so even typing is a chore. Hopefully Monday the cast will come off then I have A fence to put up, a bathroom to build, AHA in Pomona, FFR Huntington Beach and then back to the Comet. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Ryan I got the splint off last Monday but none of the finger joints or the wrist are working very well. It gets a little better every day I just keep working at it.

I will look forward to the pictures.

It would be great to meet you at HB. This year I hope to have the naked car back again so in between AHA and HB I have work to do. So I have to change it from this at AHA:

To this in a week. I hope I don't get any tickets from the HB police I drive it like this from Long Beach to HB on PCH:

Progress Pics

Well i finally remebered the ccamera today so here are a few pics, progress includes complete front and rear suspension removed from the wagon. As far as the rear, I am waiting for all new bushings for the springs and some new shocks. There are pics of the rear end included.

As far as the front I got it all out today and started to clean and sandblast all the pieces I am keeping, drag link, spindles etc. I am going to install new upper and lowers, cut the springs a bit and install new shocks etc. When I go the upper and lowers off I was able to undercoat/paint the spots i wasnt able to get behind...Enjoy the pics. Oh yeah my sickness continues I bought a 1963 Galaxie 500 this weekend, 352 V8 car, padded dash, AC power steering beautiful patina. Dont get excited it was 1k dollars LOL

Ryan,

Thanks for the pictures you are making good head way. I love the Galaxie and it looks in great shape. You could fit a family of 4 in that trunk.

As for me the projects keep piling up on top of projects and the Comet keeps getting buried. I had to replace a fuel pump and relay in my daily driver and a day later my wife's Jeep breaks a valve guide which is rattling around in the cylinder so that vehicle is down and I had to tow a trailer full of stuff the next day. Below is a picture of my backup tow vehicle.

Got some work done today

Well today my son went to the shop with me and we got some work done!, Installed new upper and lowers in the front, cut one coil out of the front springs and installed them, put both backing plates, brakes, sway bar and strut rods on the front end. We then moved to the back, I finally got the new bushings for the rear leafs so we lubed em up and pressed em in with a vise. Then we hung the leafs, put in the rear end, installed the axles with new bearings, slapped on the backing plates as well as the brakes, then the new shocks, basically got her to be a roller by the end of the day, here are a few pics. Thanks Ryan

May put the motor n trans in next week, I will keep you posted!! Ryan

Ryan,

Thanks for the pictures you are really making some good progress. I want to do the same cut to my front springs. Do you know how much it will drop the front when you cut one coil out?

Not positive????

I will let you know, I cut one full coil on the mustang and it wasnt quite enough, so I went another 3/4 of a coil and this is how it sits

I will be sure to let you know how one coil affects the Comet, I also have lowering blocks on hand for the rear as well :-)

Got a lot more crap to put inside before the final stance and before i choose the tire size.......more to come.

Got some stuff.....got some stuff done
Well we got some parts from Falconparts.com and put a few of them into "Kathy". Got the fuel sending unit, seal and retainer, a new fangled trans mount for later trans mount style, alot of rubber and seals for the tailgate as well as some rubbers for the wind wings.

The motor is now in, and I have started to assemble the motor accessories from the inside out, and..........problems right away, nothin that cant be handled but.....I think I might have shared already but the Tri-Y's (headers) from the mustang wont fit on the Comet since I am leaving the column shift C4 (green dot) in the car. Also the power steering pulleys dont match up wit the 65 style pulleys from the mustang, and the shift arm is wrong behind the neutral safety switch.

Well i bought the exhaust manifolds back from the guy I sold the motor too, and the shift leg too :-)

Then I found a 62 63 style crank pulley for the mustang motor to match the power steering pump, wow is it heavy (the old pulley)!!! I had the entire power steering system rebuilt and it is back in as well.

Gas tank was put in as well as the wind wing rubbers....That took a while but was rewarding..........kind of a therapy session for those. Anyway here are some updated pics to enjoy. It took me a while to figure out my new stupid a$$ smart phone. ENjoy!!

Here is a pic of the gas tank, undercoated and installed

Here is the fancy dancy universal trans mount, its kinda hard to see. It actually is a nice piece and eliminated the old cantilever style piece that was on there

Here is the wind wing
BEFORE

AND NEW RUBBER INSTALLED

And a shot of the motor installed, the black valve covers are temporary, the pretty GOld ones will go on eventually. Oh yeah and I painted the manifold black too

Not sure what I will be working on this week there is so much to do, I will keep you posted, one day a week thats all I got now a days

Ryan,
Nice work! You are making good progress. As usual I am living vicariously thru your progress on your Comet thanks for the pictures. I will check out the trans mount you got at Falconparts.com. I need to build one for the 4R70W transmission I have but if I can find one already built that would work it would be nice. What gas tank and tank mount is that? I need to come up with a setup because I can't use the tank out of the Mountaineer and the old Comet tank is toast. I was considering a 95 Mustang tank and pump since I need a return type system for the 5.0.

Stock

Jeff that is the stock tank, it was in pretty good condition, I had it resealed and I sprayed and undercoating on it from Duplicolor. I think u could find a good used tank and have it reconditioned, but you may need a diff set up with a return line? Let me know what you come up with, Ryan

Premature?

Well not alot of pics from this Fridays work day. I basically changed the pulleys from the 1965 289 to the old style pulleys from the Challenger 289 (1964) so that I could get the pulleys for the power steering, alternator and water pump to line up.

I also installed some parts I got last week from falconarts.com.........like the fuel filler hose...Thats where the premature part comes in. I couldn't wait to complete the fuel neck and install the holy grail................the gas cap. The guys at the shop joked about me installing it...I will definitely take it off and put it back into storage until Kathy is done but I had to take a pic for my FF5 friends.

Have a great holiday weekend, godspeed to all the soldiers (including my son in Afghanistan)

Ryan

Extra part, C-3DE-9431-A

Any tiger owners with a V8, and for other Comet owners, I have picked up an extra drivers side exhaust manifold, it is a pretty rare part, i needed one for the wagon and ended up with 2, not on purpose, PM me if interested, cost me 100 bucks I will sell for 80
Part number C-3DE-9431-A, passenger side is same but ends in B

Ryan,

The gas cap looks great. Are you going to put a chain and pad lock on it so it doesn't sprout legs and walk away? As for the gas tank I have not made a decision yet. Lots to do before I get to that stage. I know they make an external fuel pump setup that can be used with the stock tank and the 5.0 so it's either that or use a 95 mustang tank and pump and I think there is a mod I have to do for that. Thanks for the pictures.

Going to Friends of Steve McQueen show in Chino this weekend maybe see some of you all there? RYan

not alot to report

This one day a week thing is killing me but I guess one day a week is better than no days a week. I feel like I am crawling on this resto, lol.

Well this friday, I sandblasted the exhaust manifolds and I painted and installed them. (headers wont fit with C4 column shift).

I installed the front shocks and layed the old wiring harness into the engine bay, I also installed one valve cover and laid the other one on the head.

I also put the carb on the manifold and determined the following:
I need black allen bolts to secure the valve cover, (to look nice), and I need to replace the blue and red fuel log with a nice black one from Earls. lol

Then i pretty much looked and tried to figure out what would be next, on the following Friday, not a real productive day but.........

Cya next week, here are some pics with the valve covers and carb laid into place. Ryan

Looking really good - I like the gold in the engine bay.... Much like the gold that was used on the tin parts back in the day...

I also know what you mean about the 1-day a week thing... I'm lucky to even get that now..

slow but sure....

Well I started my experiment with poly Armour brake and fuel lines, the brake lines are pretty good so far but the bigger 5/16 line still kinks pretty easy when making a 90 degree bend. Headliner is in and the rear brake lines are in.
I cheated and started to install a pre bent fuel line kit for a 67 mustang. I will post pics later tonight, just got home n going to get some grub, Everyone go out and enjoy your summer weekend. Ryan

The 3/16 brake lines works pretty good so far

Passenger side rear

The 5/16 line is not so good, I kinked it a couple of times tryin to make a 90, so I revertrd to a pre bent line for a mustang, so far so good.

Headliner is in as well as all the Dynamat and the heater box.

Stay tuned should be done in about 100 years, lol

Ryan,

Thanks for the pictures. Your work looks great as usual. I haven't heard of poly Amour brake line it looks interesting. I know that feeling of being done in 100 years. It's the feeling I get ever time I work on mine. I just have to put my blinders on and concentrate on small projects and not look at the big picture. I have made some progress too and will post something when I get some pictures. Today I'm going to pick up some wheels that I bought on eBay. They are used but are really close to what I was going to buy new and they will save me $900.00. If I'm ever going to finish this I will have to make some compromises. I'm looking forward to more pictures.

Bend by hand

The few bends you do see in the brake lines are all by hand, it is really easy to work with......so far. As for the 5/16 line as long as I am not making a 90 degree bend it seems to bend ok by hand. I am using a bender on some of that size as it is just easier to bend. Like reg lines you have to go very slow witht he big stuff but the 3/16 is like silly putty, will update again on Friday, my boy will be on leave from Afghanistan for 2 weeks so we will work on the wagon together on Friday, cant wait. Ryan
