weird exhaust....Ignition?

I have been chasing some gremlins in the past....Vac. leaks...Timing...Valve adjustment...NOW, I have a weird exhaust "feeling" and symptom...I have a 65 coupe with a 302 (edelbrock rpm intake, heads, cam and 650 avs carb.) Exhaust is not normal...Headers from 3-4 are black and have a strong "push", but the headers from 1-2 are not black and have a "weak" push. Same thing on the other side...except reversed, 5-6 header has stong"push" and black (rich) but 7-8 have a "weak" push and relatively " clean exhaust... Could this be a valve issue? ... I have the old firing order that I verified with edelbrock with their cam... Engine backfires like a lean condition, but the exhaust smells rich. Any help out there would be appreciated.

firing order

I was told this engine has all edelbrock parts inside, but when I hand rotated the engine from tdc #1 cyl...the next valves to open and close were #3, then #7....The edelbrock cam is the 15426378 firing order....#5 valves did not even move for the first whole 360 degrees turn....Soo, does this mean the cam is 13726548... Is there any other way to figure out the timing order? If the firing oder was 137... and someone timed it for 154...Is the engine damaged...It has been run...?

just switch the ignition wires to the alternate firing order and you will find out pretty fast which is the correct firing sequence.

tried that..

I was wondering if there is any way to tell which cam I have (engine was assembled by previous owner..) other than pulling it...Can I loosen the rockers and then turn over the engine starting at tdc...see which pushrods move?

what year 302
check your firing order

ping Gordon

and yes you can watch the valves open and close to do the cam count, why loosen the rockers, rotate by hand wrench.
mark #1 and verify it
