I am considering have a 351w based 427 build and I would like to hear from people who have this setup. I am looking for a smooth engine for the street, no track anticipated, with excellent drivability, nothing strung out. Are these engines easy to live with? I know it depends on cam and stuff but I am just looking for some general feedback before I place an order.
I love mine, but it makes a lot of power, and it doesnt seem like thats exactly what your looking for. you could use less cam than me, but it needs a lot of airflow due to the big cubes, so it likes big heads, some cam and big intake. You cant have all those cubes and not let it breathe. If you want something real "streetable" and not so "strung out" you could just warm up a 351 or stroke to 392 inches, and it would be easier to live with and still make real good power. 351/427 is for those who want a scary fast car.

more cubic inches will make more power,or should I say "should" make more power, with a milder setup at lower rpm's. A 427w with some afr 205's,9.5:1 comp. and a mild cam will easily make 450hp under 6000 rpm and be very streetable.
good luck Andrew
Corry, I've have one and it's scary fast. Making about 540 hp. It's a bit rough on the bottom, idles at about 1,000 rpm. Once it warms up it works ok on the street.
The big thing in opting for an engine like this is communication with your engine builder. Talk to him and explain to him what you want and how ou are going to use it. Just because you can build an engine with unreal horsepower doesn't mean you have to. Build a 427w for the bragging rights but with a mild cam for the street (and better gas mileage. Also the small block version is lighter giving the car better balance.
Yea, it's a 427!

I'm also working on specs for my 351w to 427w engine for maximum streetability while still being scary fast with 427w bragging rights. I'm trying to have it be just under 500HP. I'd like to hear any recomendations on:
-Cam
-Piston
-Head
-Carb

I love mine. Scary fast, quick, and sounds just great. Hts 125 real quick. But also rides real nice on the street and gets 15mpg. A very streetable and trackable combination.
-1974 block, bored .060 over. Main cap girdle, main cap and head studs
-Comp Cams retro roller, 290/290, .544/.544
-Forged probe pistons, 10.5 compression.
-Forged crank
-Forged H beam rods
-Alum flywheel, light weight Romac balancer.
-Dart Windsor Sr. Heads, stage III porting. Comp Cams beehive valve springs. These heads are good, But I think a set of AFR 205's would be better. Maybe next year.
-Momar 8 stack EFI, Haltech computer. Really calms down big cam. Idles nice at 750rpm's.
-Mallory ignition
