I have in my possesion a 1973 vintage 302 from an f150. It ran well before I took it out 15 years ago. I plan on starting an FFR roadster build in the near future, would this engine be an acceptable place to start or would I be better off with a later 5.0? I've heard stories of older metallurgy being better and worse than newer. Which do I believe?

Thanks

It really depends on which early block and what you plan on doing with the engine.
The 73 could be a Mexican block which was the best of the non-boss blocks. The standard block is better in strength than the 5.0 block but it has a 2 piece rear main seal and needs some mods to be a hydraulic roller.

Gordon, I'm building a street /autox car. I feel that 350 hp would be adequate (at least initially!)I like the idea of a roller cam engine, and I am very strongly inclined to use Webbers. Where do you find the stamping to ID the place of manufacture? Are the 73 heads much different from the newer 5.0 heads?

Thanks again

The ID on the block is on the bottom above the starter. To ID a Mexican block you need to look in the valley pan area and it will say Mexico.
Buy a set of aluminum heads the stock 302 heads aren't worth anything.

2 holes to be drilled and tapped. Some gronding in the valley pan area. It takes about an hour to do it.

Gordon- Thanks again! I just checked out your website, I'm impressed. I really do appreciate the time you spend answering questions. Did I see a post that you had some heads (alum) for sale? If so how much?
